The Chough family is a family of coal miners who are struggling to make ends meet while their son Willie is away fighting in the war. Rudyard and Willie meet each other while they are both in the trenches and become friends. Willie tells Rudyard about the horrors of the war and Rudyard tells Willie about his dreams of becoming a writer.
