Kipling's poem in opposition to the terms of the grant of self-governance to the Union of South Africa first appeared in THE STANDARD on 27 July 1906 and A. P. Watt arranged with Doubleday for its publication in this format to secure copyright in the US. Kipling never collected the poem although an earlier different poem wore the same title.
