First edition in book form one of less than thirty copies printed to secure copyright in the US. Kipling's poem in opposition to the terms of the grant of self-governance to the Union of South Africa first appeared in THE STANDARD on 27 July 1906 and A. P. Watt arranged with Doubleday for its publication in this format to secure copyright in the US. Kipling never collected the poem although an earlier different poem wore the same title. First English Edition preceded only by the American copyright edition that was issued earlier that year in two wrappered leaflets and a Paris edition translated into French. The standard binding for this English edition was this blue cloth but some copies were issued instead undoubtedly for an additional price in maroon limp leather. It is interesting to note that the front cover Ganesha device elephant with lotus flower and swastika no longer has the swastika -- for this was 1933.
