Kipling Rudyard
Autograph Letter Signed by J. Lockwood Kipling to "My dear Wood"
1874. Three pages of a four-page single folded leaf. Signed "J.L. Kipling" with a P.S. that is additionally initialed "J.L.K.". No place and no date other than "Friday Morn" but a former cataloguer has indicated "India" and "probably 1874". This is a humorous letter penned by John. Lockwood Kipling 1837-1911; he met his wife Alice in the village of Rudyard Staffordshire -- hence the first name of their son. The year they married 1865 they moved to India where over the years Lockwood would be an art teacher an illustrator and a museum curator. He illustrated several of his son's books including the JUNGLE BOOKs and KIM. The text of this letter reads: Accept my congratulations on the judgment given the other day which I suppose is on the right side for you. I don't know whether I might also to sic congratulate you on the spread of a statement that you leave the T of I Times of India having made over a lakh of rupees out of it. We hear these industriously circulated stories of your wealth and heartily wish they were true. In haste Yours truly signed J.L. Kipling P.S. Mrs K sends her love to Mrs Wood. She is occupied with a sick friend staying with us who goes home by the next troop-ship. J.L.K. W. Martin Wood was the Editor of the Times of India and also of the Bombay Review; among his books was an 1884-1889 trilogy titled "THINGS OF INDIA" MADE PLAIN. "A lakh of rupees" means 100000 rupees. Kipling Rudyard
Typed Letter Signed to "Wm. Earl Hodgson Esq."
1900. One page on plain paper with the typed heading "THE ELMS Rottingdean: Sussex Oct. 24: 1900". The text of this letter reads: Dear Mr. Hodgson:-- In reply to yours of the 23rd I do not know whether at present I have anything by me that would suit the Anglo-Saxon Review but I sent the other day two stories to Mr. A.P. Watt Hastings House Norfolk Street Strand who manages my business and it is possible that one or other of them may be suitable for your review. Very sincerely yours signed in ink Rudyard Kipling The Anglo-Saxon Review was a short-lived "quarterly miscellany" created and edited by Lady Randolph Churchill her son Winston served as an advisor published by John Lane in handsome leatherbound volumes with elaborate gilt tooling. Contributors included Henry James Winston Churchill George Gissing and Stephen Crane but apparently not Rudyard Kipling -- though he was "reviewed" on pp 244-245 of the first number. The subscription list included many from the wealthy the nobility even heads of state. But maybe it was all a bit too much -- for there were only ten quarterly issues from June 1899 to September 1901 with this letter falling roughly in the middle; while Lady Churchill was away on the hospital ship Maine during the Boer War Sidney Low and Earl Hodgson managed publication. The letter is in very good condition with minor edge-wear and with a discreet tape-mend on the reverse side where the letter was once folded; there is also a small name and address inked onto the rear side. Provenance: from the renowned three-generation Dodge Family Autograph Collection.

hardcover

Kipling Rudyard
Autograph Letter Signed to "Dear Mrs Richard Darcy" with accompanying photograph
1898. Both sides of a card which bears the heading "The Elms Rottingdean nr Brighton." Dated Dec 12 1898. In its original envelope which provides the recipent's address "The Cottage Clifton" with both Rottingdean and Brighton postmarks. With accompanying sepia photographic portrait of Kipling standing on a sailing vessel mounted on gilt-edged card. This is a very intriguing if not tantalizing letter from Rudyard Kipling to a Mrs Darcy. It reads: That is indeed a beautiful photograph. Of course _we_ know what it means; but to the average spectator it looks very much as if your sailing-master had "shanghaied" one of the inhabitants of Adrigole and the unhappy native was slowly reviving on the decks of the _Margharita_. And the worst of it is I can't explain to anyone that they are your husband's clothes I'm wearing! I feel I never thanked you properly for the good times you gave me on the yacht that wonderful day . final long sentence hard to decipher . With best regards to your husband Very sincerely yours signed Rudyard Kipling. Accompanying the letter is a photo of Kipling standing on a sailing vessel presumably the Margharita; Mrs Darcy must have sent it to Kipling and with this letter he was returning it to her. We have not been able to learn who Mr & Mrs Richard Darcy were in connection with Kipling. But we DO know a that Adrigole is a harbor village on the southwest corner of Ireland; b that the Darcys' hometown of Clifton is right by Bristol on the southwest shore of England -- not all that far from Adrigole; and c that Kipling spent some time in Autumn 1898 including time in Adrigole's Bantry Bay observing naval manoeuvres on board the Pelorus the guest of Captain Bayly. At that time Kipling must have spent a day on board the Darcys' yacht and subsequently after each was back in England she sent him a letter enclosing this photograph of Kipling. It is tempting to jump to the conclusion that this was some sort of illicit rendezvous -- and in fact whatever dealer previously wrote a description for this letter several decades ago did just that. However the jocular tone of Kipling's letter combined with the formality of both the greeting and the signature leads us to suggest that they simply had "good times on the yacht that wonderful day" -- perhaps for all we know with numerous other people. The puzzle that Kipling is wearing her husband's clothes is most easily solved by the idea that his clothes got soaked as often happens on a sailboat. The letter/card is in very good condition one corner has a few creases with a couple of short pieces of tape one of which encroaches on RK's signature; both the envelope and the photo are fine.

hardcover

THE DAY'S WORK. signed by Kipling
1898. New York: Doubleday & McClure Co. 1898. Original green cloth pictorially decorated in black. First Edition of this collection of twelve tales illustrated with eight plates -- preceding the London edition by a week. Included are "The Devil and the Deep Sea" "An Error in the Fourth Dimension" and "The Brushwood Boy." "This was the first of Kipling's books to appear under the imprint of Frank N. Doubleday "Effendi" who after eighteen years had left Scribner's. to set up business for himself" Richards. Kipling himself helped create the front cover design featuring a Viking longship -- which design would still be adorning his first editions in the 1930s unlike Kipling's London editions that included a swastika. This copy is in very good-plus condition endpapers cracked some minor wear at the extremities. Richards A115; Stewart 179. This copy is signed by Kipling in the manner he typically employed -- striking a line through his name on the title page and signing immediately above.

hardcover

THE SEVEN SEAS. with presentation note signed
1896. New York: D. Appleton and Company 1896. 6 pp undated ads. Original coarse mottled light-brown buckram cloth decorated in gilt with dust jacket. First American Edition published on 30 October 1896 the same day as Methuen's English edition. This volume of verse includes two of Kipling's better-known poems "A Song of the English" and "Hymn before Action." The handsome Art Nouveau binding design is initialed "EMD" who is unidentified though it has been speculated -- by the Met -- that she may have been Evangeline Danielle. This copy is in coarse light brown buckram -- which is not one of the three cloth colors orange olive slate or textures recorded by bibliographers -- though it does have the standard gilt design. The volume is in fine condition; also present is about 80% of the original 1896 dust jacket which reproduces the same elaborate design on front cover and spine. Richards A92; Livingston 131; Stewart 139. Tipped to the title page is a presentation note signed by Kipling "J. Conland from Rudyard Kipling Oct. 96". In 1892 Kipling had married Carrie Balestier of Brattleboro Vermont sister of Wolcott who after helping Rudyard work with the 1891 International Copyright Act collaborated with him in writing the novel THE NAULAHKA; due to Rudyard's poor health and the failure of his UK bank the couple settled in Vermont where they lived for five years in a home they named "Naulakha" -- spelled a little differently. These five years were some of Kipling's most prolific with the publication of both JUNGLE BOOKs and CAPTAINS COURAGEOUS. Dr. James Conland of Brattleboro brought the Kiplings' elder daughter Josephine into the world; furthermore Conland had been a member of the Cape Cod fishing fleet and it was he who took Kipling to explore the wharves and quays of Boston and Gloucester which resulted in Kipling's 1897 novel CAPTAINS COURAGEOUS -- of which the American edition would be dedicated to Conland. Sadly in 1897 the Kiplings fled Vermont -- and returned to England -- after a violent argument with Carrie's family; in 1899 Carrie persuaded Rudyard to journey to New York so she could see her family on which journey the Kipling family all fell ill with pneumonia resulting in the death -- at age six -- of little Josephine; this prompted Rudyard to vow never to return to America. We have no idea whether this signed presentation slip of paper actually accompanied this copy to Conland: on the one hand why didn't Kipling simply write on a page in the book -- but on the other hand he may have mailed the slip to Conland while instructing the publisher to send the book directly to Conland. In any case this copy is in an unrecorded publisher's binding and the presentation slip does bear the exact month of the book's publication.

hardcover

No owner name or internal markings. Slight crease to foot of spine. A very nice copy. FINE in like jacket; now in a clear protective sleeve. vi 185 pages. Notes. Includes bibliographical references. CONTENTS: The taming of the Irish Afreets -- When east meets west: Kipling's India of anti-gravity -- Exiled home: the voice of the Irish soldiers -- Shamrocks in the Veldt: two types of Aphasic Empire -- Kim in South Africa -- The dynamite war of analogies. SUMMARY: 'Empire of Analogies' examines Kipling's representation of the Irish in his Indian stories while tracing his changing views of the Empire as the hegemony of British imperialism faltered towards the end of the 19th century. Starting from the analysis of the Irish characters in Kipling's Indian stories this book shows that the representation of the British Empire was greatly indebted to analogies and comparisons made between colonies. It contrasts two different ways of making colonial analogies: 'imperialist' and 'nationalist'. Kipling as a young journalist was keenly aware of the fact that Indian and Irish nationalists drew analogies between each other's colonial situation to make the case for self-government and British misrule and his repeated emphasis on Irish participation in the Raj can be seen as a powerful 'imperialist' counter-representation to these subversive analogies. With this framework in mind this book traces how Kipling's representation of Empire changed over time as he moved away from India and also how the hegemony of British imperialism faltered toward the end of the nineteenth century. This book makes a major contribution to post-colonialism studies in general and to the comparative study of Ireland and India in particular. Will be well-packed for posting/shipping. Lg.8vo.
