‎1891. Allahabad: A.H. Wheeler & Co. 1891. 4 preliminary 5 pp undated ads. Original diagonally-divided red and blue cloth.<br/><br/> First Suppressed Edition. A.H. Wheeler publisher of the "Indian Railway Series" had been Kipling's authorized publisher in India. However after Kipling left India for England Wheeler promptly prepared for publication three more collections of Kipling pieces without authority: THE CITY OF DREADFUL NIGHT AND OTHER SKETCHES THE SMITH ADMINISTRATION and LETTERS OF MARQUE. Kipling insisted that all three editions be entirely destroyed and today there is only one known copy of the first title and only six known copies of the second title. But LETTERS OF MARQUE does turn up: although it was estimated that only about 100 out of 1000 printed copies escaped destruction the book today does not seem to be that scarce. This copy as with most known copies has a Wheeler price stamp on the front free endpaper plus a stamp showing this copy's date of dispatch from the publisher's premises 17 Nov '91 -- the book was published in October. The volume is in very good-plus condition with a bit of wear at one corner of the spine and the typical minor "lifting" of the cloth. For some reason this book almost always turns up in this approximate condition. It continues with more tales of Mowgli that exemplify "The Laws of the Jungle" -- with illustrations by John Lockwood Kipling Rudyard's father. This was the second of the four Kipling gift books bound similarly by Macmillan with SOLDIER TALES and CAPTAINS COURAGEOUS coming out the following two years respectively. This is an attractive near-fine copy volume slightly askew spine gilt less than bright but no foxing and essentially no wear; the front flyleaf bears an inked "Xmas 1895" signature. Original publisher's navy cloth spine lettered in gilt pictorial jungle images based on artwork by the author's father John Lockwood Kipling stamped to the front board in gilt all edges gilt green coated endpapers. A good copy with wear moderate wear and rubbing to the spine spine ends frayed corners worn lean to spine; internally ownership blindstamp to first blank spine cracked at pages 128/129. Overall a good presentable copy in the original publisher's cloth. The Jungle Book is a collection of short stories and verses the most famous of which relate to the feral child protagonist Mowgli a "man cub." While they can be read independently of each other each chapter serves as a fable using animal figures to provide a moral lesson. In each volume the short stories are both preceded and followed by poems or songs including the notable "Mowgli's Song" and "The Law of the Jungle." The Jungle Books based on the author's childhood and later work experience in British India are indicative of Western Orientalist ideology at the turn of the 20th century which is somewhat softened by Kipling's fondness for his former home. Both Jungle Books are illustrated by the author's father John Lockwood Kipling who was a practicing illustrator and art professor in Bombay. . First Edition. Hard Cover. Good. Originally published serially in McClure's Magazine beginning in November 1896 Captains Courageous is a story about Harvey Cheyne the marooned son a wealthy railroad magnate who is rescued by fishermen off the Grand Banks of Newfoundland. After being tossed overboard an ocean liner Harvey meets Disko Troop captain of the small fishing boat We're Here who refuses to take the young man back to port but agrees to take him on as part of the crew. Over the course of the novel Harvey befriends the captain's son Dan who helps the arrogant millionaire develop into a hard-working honest young man who is self-reliant and content with living simply.
