"The poem is a rhyming narrative from the point of view of a British soldier about a native water-bearer a 'Bhishti' who saves the soldier's life but is soon shot and killed. In the final three lines the soldier regrets the abuse he dealt to Din and admits that Din is the better man of the two for sacrificing his own life to save another. The poem was published as one of the set of martial poems called the Barrack-Room Ballads." The publisher identified on front wrapper as Alex. Grosset is at the same address as F. M. The animals include monkeys asses goats and sheep goats and oxen buffaloes and pigs horses and mules elephants camels etc. Chapters on animals calls animal training reptiles animals in Indian art beast fights animals and the supernatural. These were written during Kipling's journey in 1889 from India to England via Burma China Japan and the United States.<p>In 1909 B.W. Dodge & Company New York used the title for an unauthorized volume containing thirty stories letters and articles and one poem of which twenty-two of the stories and the poem has previously appeared in Turn-overs."
