Rudyard KIPLING
The Irish Guards in the Great War. The First Battalion. Edited and Compiled from their Diaries and Papers. With a Foreword by George Webb. Re-issue Edition. FINE COPY IN UNCLIPPED DUSTWRAPPER
Spellmount Staplehurst 1997. 8vo. First Edition thus with very numerous illustrations and maps many coloured in outline in the text and endpaper maps; red cloth gilt back a fine copy in unclipped dustwrapper. Kipling undertook the history of the regiment in WWI following the death in action of his son John at the Battle of Loos whilst serving with the Second Battalion; a personal tragedy from which the author never fully recovered. After five and a half years of research 'done with agony and bloody sweat' the work was immediately recognised as both a military and a literary masterpiece. This much needed re-issue of the original edition of 1923 is augmented with a considerable number of previously unpublished photographs of places and events together with a thoughtful foreword by the editor of the 'Kipling Journal'. Enser p.66; White p. 45 both recording the original edition. Spellmount, Staplehurst, hardcover

The Phantom 'Rickshaw and other Eerie tales Indian Railway Library Series
Allahabad: A.H. Wheeler and Co. London: Sampson Low Marston and Company 1890. Short stories. A 'Wheeler' pamphlet published in India at 1 Rupee or in the UK at 1 shilling. Third edition overall; this copy nicely preserved in the original illustrated pale green wraps. Some expected dustiness and handling spine rolled with a few creases and tears browned to extremities. A most presentable and usable example of a fragile 'shilling' paperback. 'The Phantom Rickshaw' story is a classic of 'the psychopathic state' and this tale along with 'The Strange Ride of Morrowbie Jukes' originally titled 'The Village of the Dead' have been likened in manner to the weird tales of Edgar Allan Poe successfully re-created in a Simla rather than Gothic setting. Henry James said: Kipling strikes me personally as the most complete man of genius as distinct from fine intelligence that I have ever known. In 1907 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature making him the first English-language writer to receive the prize and to date he remains its youngest recipient. Among other honours he was sounded out for the British Poet Laureateship and on several occasions for a knighthood all of which he declined. The Bombay edition was initially published in 20 volumes and limited to 1000 copies. Kipling continued to write and it eventually grew to 31 volumes but the last 11 volumes were limited to 500 copies only. This collection is complete in twenty five volumes which waslimited to 1050. Internally all volumes are generally firmly bound and bright though with some slight straining to volume twenty-three. Somefoxing to the endpapers and textblock edge. Many leaves are uncut. Replacements for the original spine labels bound into the rear of each volume. Overall: VERY GOOD with GOOD dustwrappers where present. 19 - London -Macmillan & Co Ltd. hardcover
