[Janus Press] Kafka, Franz | etchings by Claire Van Vliet
A Country Doctor / Ein Landarzt
Philadelphia: Janus Press 1962. Hard Cover. Very Good binding. Quarto. 28 4 blank pp. illus. Limited edition number 106 of 250 copies. Signed by Van Vliet on at the colophon. As issued in cloth with title in gilt on the spine. Irregular sunning to both boards else nearly fine; contents clean.

Among the earliest titles of the long-running Janus Press this is considered by Van Vliet to be the first major work of the press. Van Vliet issued its first volume in 1955 and continues issuing work under Van Vliet's hand and direction today more than 70 years on. Willa and Edwin Muir's English translations shares each page with Kafka's German in a two-column format. The work is illustrated by 12 relief etching by Van Vliet one of which is a page-spread illustration. Her bibliographer Ruth Fine writes of this book: "In contrast to her rather joyous celebrations of nature this and later works by which she pays homage in celebration of literature tend to be austere in character. A somberness is apparent in both the stark format and the heightened intensity of the illustrations. It is in fact the formality in the total design of these volumes that gives balance to the images which are overtly emotionally charged and in so doing gives meaning to the adoption of Janus as a symbol. In The Country Doctor all of the plates convey a sense of isolation perhaps terror. The strong dark/light contrast intrinsic to the method of printing etchings in relief with black ink accentuates the drama of the tale" p. 11. Fine Ruth Lehrer. The Janus Press 1955-75 p. 33. [Jarmila Sobotova] [Jan Sobota] [Design Binding] Kafka, Franz
Metamorphosis
New York: The Limited Editions Club 1984. Limited to 1500 signed copies this being #858. Quarto 28x21cm 61pp. Illustrations by José Luis Cuevas and signed by him at the colophon. Design binding by Jarmila Jelena Sobotova. French structure full black goatskin with mirror image green cutout designs on upper and lower boards. Green morocco spine label in the shape of a pedestal with an apple balancing on top lettered in gilt. Top edge painted green hand sewn head and tailbands in black and green silk. Green and black marbled endpapers by Sobotova. Fine condition in matching Solander box. Kafka's famous novella from the Limited Editions Club with interpretive illustrations from Mexican artist José Luis Cuevas 1934-2017. This copy in a unique design binding from Czech artist Jarmila Jelena Sobotova former student of Jan Sobota 1939-2012. A copy of Sobotova's own description of this project is included and sheds some light on her process of creating this tremendous volume: "The top and back covers decorations are based on Cuevas interpretation of the story - metamorphosis of a man. There are two mirror images that appears skewed in abstract way. This design was created by cutting out the shapes in the leather after the book was covered. The depressions were filled with leather dust and painted with insect like acrylic colors." Accompanying the book is an exhibit catalogue featuring the works of both Jan and Jarmila from the Mildred Hawn Exhibition Gallery at SMU in Dallas 1995 which both artists have signed. The Limited Editions Club unknown
