Aveva individuato nell'uomo, nell'enigma dell'uomo, nell'imperscrutabilità della sua essenza più profonda, negli abissi di quello che è destinato comunque a restare un mistero, l'origine del male, in tutte le sue manifestazioni individuali e sociali. Kafka è "pensatore politico" - come Arendt lo definisce - proprio perché è la guida più affidabile per esplorare gli intrecci che connettono etica e politica, e che ritrovano nell'individuo la radice delle forme politiche.

Nel panorama delle città che Kafka incontrò ovviamente di gran lunga preminente è la sua città, Praga; ma tra le città che Kafka visitò un rilievo particolare assume Milano, la città italiana che Kafka meglio conobbe; non pochi, e pour cause, ipotizzano che il penultimo capitolo del "Processo" sia ambientato nell'interno del duomo di Milano. Milano fu anche la prima città in Italia che gli dedicò un'attenzione non trascurabile.

There is something disturbing and uncompromising about each image by itself and in the context of the relentless whole. Schles' point is that we should not be distracted but instead be completely immersed. If "Invisible City" is inward-looking "The Geometry of Innocence" looks outward at the larger world and sees both good and bad cause for hope and reason for despair. Still the prevailing sentiment is dark and melancholy and as such is reminiscent of his debut collection. Instead he is for a photography that somehow retains its subversive existential power and empowers people given the fact that "we are formed by a flawed society. Questo saggio indaga alcuni aspetti della psicoanalisi attraverso l'esame critico di testi letterari esemplari. Grazie a un racconto di Mark Twain citato da Freud, che tratta del furto di un cocomero, viene messo a confronto il concetto di Super - Io freudiano e quello di coscienza morale in Jung: lo scopo è quello di dimostrare come la psicoanalisi e la psicologia analitica abbiano prodotto due distinte concezioni etiche e, di conseguenza, due idee differenti di psicoterapia. Nella seconda parte, la stessa indagine viene condotta su indimenticabili personaggi della letteratura e viene approfondito il tema del conflitto affettivo tra uomo e donna e tra genitori e figli.

Nel corso del lavoro per la sua monumentale biografia di Kafka, Reiner Stach ha isolato novantanove "reperti" che corrispondono ad altrettanti momenti ed episodi, testimoniati dallo scrittore stesso o da suoi amici e contemporanei. Tale mosaico ci mostra un Kafka poco conosciuto: frequentatore di casinò e bordelli, o di un collezionista di foto osé, o in ufficio in preda al "fou rire" di fronte al sussiegoso superiore, o fra gli appassionati di nuoto e d'aeroplani, o seduto in giostra in mezzo a ragazzine vocianti, ma anche abile falsificatore della firma altrui - si tratti di Thomas Mann o di una sedicenne vagheggiata a Weimar... Fra le sorprese che ci riserva il libro vi è la prima Lettera al padre, rivolta ancora ai "Cari genitori", e la piantina dell'appartamento in cui Gregor Samsa si risveglia trasformato in un insetto. Se esilarante è la pubblica lettura della Colonia penale in una galleria di Monaco, dove gli astanti cadono in deliquio o fuggono, incapaci di reggere quell'"odore di sangue", mentre Kafka prosegue imperterrito, commovente è la storia delle lettere che lo scrittore attribuisce a una bambola persa in un parco di Berlino, per consolare una bambina in lacrime. Lettere perdute per sempre. Conservato è invece l'appello a Kafka di un infelice messo alle strette dalla cugina che non comprende il senso della Metamorfosi.
