Ulisses
Rio de Janeiro: Objetiva. Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. 2005. Trade Paperback. 8573026731 . Slight corner bump otherwise slight wear; Dust Jacket 1/8" tail tear slight edgwear. Crisp trade paperback. ; Portuguese language. ; Clssicosmodernos . JOYCE James
Ulysses
New York: Random House 1934. First American Edition First Printing. Hardcover. Very Good /Good. First printing of the first American edition. Stout 8vo. Pp. xvii 4 5-767 1. Bound in tan cloth with lettering stamped in red and black on front cover and spine. Dust jacket in first printing state with "Reichl" in lower right corner of front panel price of $3.50 on front flap. Old bookseller tag on front pastedown Peabody's Book Shop Baltimore and former owner name and date 1934 in ink on FFEP. Light foxing to book cover. Dust jacket has been cleaned and de-acidified; slight loss to head and tail of spine. A solid copy. In this cornerstone in modernist literature Ernst Reichl's concept of "total book" design took full flight commensurate with Joyce's prose as a break from tradition. Per Reichl 1973 the title page utilized "Baskerville title in Weiss initials with enlarged U retouched and a trifle condensed." In lectures Merle Armitage used Reichl's "Ulysses" to illustrate modern design vanguard and the dust jacket was featured in MOMA exhibit on the influence of Mondrian. Although from 1918 to 1920 the novel was serialised in Margaret Anderson's "The Little Review" then based in NYC her publication of the novel ceased when the issue containing the "Nausicaa" passage was seized by the US Postal Service. In truth "Ulysses" stood as proxy for the real target of postal inspectors who were alarmed or just intrigued by the inclusion of Baroness Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven's ribald Dada poetry along with Anderson's inclusion of radical political thought. In 1934 Bennett Cerf and Random House won the day prevailing in US Courts as the first English-speaking nation to allow publication two years incidentally before England. Ireland today Perhaps.
