‎Ulysses Serialized in Two Worlds Monthly--11 Volumes‎

‎New York City: Two Worlds Publishing Company. 1926. Original tan wrappers with black and alternate color each issue. Overall the issues are in good condition or better with some chipping on edges and spines with slight loss of spine content on two issues. Moderate soiling to wrappers. Edges are soiled. Text blocks tend to be clean and tight. Staple binding is holding well. January 1927 issue has previous owners name written in pencil on front. September 1927 issue shows archival repairs on the spine and older cello tape inside back wrapper. The literary world showed great intrigue when Ulysses was first published in France in 1922 and soon in England. Obscenity charges delayed the American edition until 1934. This did not stop Samuel Roth publisher of Two World Monthly from publishing a slightly edited serialized version in 1926-1927 in eleven issues of his literary magazine. By the time James Joyce successfully sued Roth to cease and desist publication Two Worlds Monthly had ceased publication. Roth argued that no one held the copyright to Ulysses in the United States allowing him to reprint the novel as he wished. The Little Review a periodical out of Chicago had received Joyce's permission to serialize Ulysses in 1917 but ran into legal issues and as far as copyright law went no one in the United States technically held the rights to publish Joyce's masterpiece. Among the most complex in terms of bibliography and printing history of any major 20th Century work this masterpiece was set by hand and each has not only typographical variations but slight variations. This was the tenth printing the history of the printings is found after the copyright page. Since this was a masterful labor of love by the printer the text block is perfectly preserved and the book has been bound in half goat skin leather over cloth and housed in a custom slipcase. This special edition is limited to 10 copies. The present copy is #7 of an edition of 10 and signed by the binder. The first truly complete edition of Joyce's literary masterpiece incorporating the author's corrected text and complemented by a prefatory list of previous editions and three appendices including a legal history of the novel and a bibliography of the author's works. The book has found itself banned and once hauled in front of the courts due to its perceived obscenity. Joyce's creation was banned in the United Kingdom up until 1936 and was the subject of an obscenity trial in the United States. Interestingly whilst it was never banned in Joyce's home country of Ireland the government did instead use a customs loophole which prevented it from being allowed in to the country. ‎Paris: Shakespeare & Company 1922. First edition one of 750 numbered copies on handmade paper from a total edition of 1000 copies this is number number 347. Thick quarto original blue and white wrappers. In excellent condition the volume is square and tight without marks of any kind with some some restoration to the spine. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. A nice example. Ulysses was published in Paris by Shakespeare & Company 1922. It was a struggle for the author to find a publisher a comic irony considering that Ulysses is "universally hailed as the most influential work of modern times" Grolier Joyce 69. Ulysses was an immediate success. The first printing sold out and "within a year Joyce had become a well-known literary figure. Ulysses was explosive in its impact on the literary world of 1922" de Grazia 27. Even so the book faced difficulties in global reception. It was banned in the U.K. and was prosecuted for the obscenity in the Nausicaa episode Ellmann 1982. Joyce's inspiration for the novel began as a young boy reading Charles Lamb's Adventures of Ulysses and writing an essay entitled "My Favorite Hero" after being impressed by the wholeness of the character Goreman 1939. The idea for the novel grew from a story in Dubliners in 1906 which Joyce expanded into a short book in 1907 before reconceptualizing it as the heady novel in 1914 Ellmann 1982. The book can initially seem unstructured and chaotic and Joyce admitted that he "put in so many enigmas and puzzles that it will keep the professors busy for centuries arguing over what I meant" The Observer 2000. The French translator Stuart Gilbert published a defense of Ulysses shortly after its publication in which he supported the novel's use of obscenity and explained its internal structure and links to the Odyssey against accusations of ambiguity. Every episode Gilbert explained is connected to the Odyssey by theme technique and correspondence between characters. Another instance of Ulysses' literary contribution is his use of stream-of-consciousness a technique employing carefully structured prose both humorous and charactering and involving puns and parodies. Joyce was a precursor to the use of stream of consciousness in the later decades. Similar narrative techniques were used by his contemporaries Virginia Wolfe William Faulkner and Italo Svevo. Their style can be better characterized as an "interior monologue rather than stream of consciousness is the appropriate term for the style in which subjective experience is recorded both in The Waves and in Woolf's writing generally" Stevenson 1992.
