Huxley, Aldous
Antic Hay
London: Chatto and Windus 1923. A first edition first printing of 'Antic Hay' published by Chatto and Windus in 1923. A very good copy without inscriptions. Some foxing to the end pastedowns and page edges. New label on the spine. Bumping to the corners. Some rubbing to the edges. Some browning to the spine. Small scratches to the spine beneath the label. Originally published in 1923 'Antic Hay' is one of his sharpest early comic novels. Set in post-war London it follows Theodore Gumbril a dissatisfied schoolmaster who abandons his job in search of pleasure freedom and identity. Around him moves a cast of cynical artists intellectuals and socialites each reflecting the uncertainty and moral drift of the 1920s. The novel is witty satirical and restless mixing farce with philosophical unease. Its title comes from Marlowe suggesting a wild absurd dance fitting for Huxley's portrait of modern life. Huxley, Aldous
Antic Hay.
London: Chatto & Windus 1923. First edition of this classic novel. Octavo original cloth. Presentation copy inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper "For James Murphy thirty years later Aldous Huxley 1954." Fine in a very good dust jacket with light rubbing and wear. Uncommon signed and inscribed. London life just after World War I devoid of values and moving headlong into chaos at breakneck speed - Aldous Huxley's Antic Hay like Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises portrays a world of lost souls madly pursuing both pleasure and meaning. Fake artists third-rate poets pompous critics pseudo-scientists con-men bewildered romantics cock-eyed futurists - all inhabit this world spinning out of control as wildly comic as it is disturbingly accurate. In a style that ranges from the lyrical to the absurd and with characters whose identities shift and change as often as their names and appearances Huxley has here invented a novel that bristles with life and energy what the New York Times called "a delirium of sense enjoyment! Huxley, Aldous
Ape and Essence.
London: Chatto & Windus 1949. First English edition of this cautionary tale and satire. Small octavo original cloth top edge blue. Near fine in a very good dust jacket. Aldous Leonard Huxley was an English writer philosopher and notable pacifist widely known for his recording of psychedelic experience 'The Doors of Perception' and his dystopian narrative 'Brave New World.' He published 'Ape and Excess' in 1948 a satire of the rise of large-scale warfare and warmongering in the 20th century.
