From the Introduction- "In the earlier part of his career especially and again towards the end Lawrence was a most prolific correspondent. There was however an intermediate period during his time of wandering when he seems to have written very little. Of letters with the date of these after-war years not more than a dozen or two have so far turned up; and there seems to be no reason to believe that further enquiries will reveal the existence of many more. It is not because they have been destroyed or are being withheld that Lawrence's letters of this period are so scarce; it is because for one reason or another he did not then care to write letters that he did not want to feel himself in relationship with anyone.
