Lord Delamere the son of The 2nd Baron Delamere and his wife Augusta Emily Seymour moved to Kenya in 1901 and acquired vast land holdings from the British Crown. Over the years he became the unofficial 'leader' of the colony's European community. He was famous for his tireless labours to establish a working agricultural economy in East Africa and was the undisputed but unofficial leader and spokesman for Kenyan settlers for 30 years. The recipient Joe Ferrier was a fan and pen pal of Huxley's. They often exchanged letters books and article clippings between England and the United States. Fine in a fine dust jacket. Nellie and Major Josceline Grant arrived in Thika in what was then British East Africa in 1912 where they became colonial settlers and established a coffee plantation. Their daughter Elspeth had quite an unconventional childhood which she later wrote about in her best known work The Flame Trees of Thika 1959 which examined how unprepared for rustic life the early British settlers really were. Nellie and Major Josceline Grant arrived in Thika in what was then British East Africa in 1912 where they became colonial settlers and established a coffee plantation. Their daughter Elspeth had quite an unconventional childhood which she later wrote about in her best known work The Flame Trees of Thika 1959 which examined how unprepared for rustic life the early British settlers really were. The Mottled Lizard continues the story when the family returns to Kenya after the first world war. Octavo original half cloth illustrated with maps and drawings by Jonathan Kingdon. Presentation copy inscribed by the author on the title page "For Joe Ferrier with my best wished Elspeth Huxley." Laid in is the original typed transmittal letter an autograph card and photograph of Huxley; all three signed by her to Ferrier. The recipient Joe Ferrier was a lifelong fan and pen pal of Huxley's.
