‎WHITE MAN'S COUNTRY.‎

‎Chatto & Windus. London 1968 with new Preface. Bookplate to front pastedown of both volumes. top edges dusty bright VG copies in lesser dustwrappers For Vol.1 soiled spines tanned & stained. For Vol.2 similar but with significant loss to centre of rear. even so a reasonable-looking set. 2 volumes. green cloth boards. 315pp & 333pp. 2 foldout maps to Vol.1 and also 2 foldout maps to Vol.2. Not merely a biography of Lord Delamere but so wide in scope as also to be a history of Kenya. Interestingly this was the author's first published book. Lord Delamere the son of The 2nd Baron Delamere and his wife Augusta Emily Seymour moved to Kenya in 1901 and acquired vast land holdings from the British Crown. Over the years he became the unofficial 'leader' of the colony's European community. He was famous for his tireless labours to establish a working agricultural economy in East Africa and was the undisputed but unofficial leader and spokesman for Kenyan settlers for 30 years. HEAVY ITEM will incur additional postal charges. Chatto & Windus. London 1968 with new Preface. hardcover‎

‎London: Chatto & Windus 1985. First edition early printing of Huxley's memoirs of her adult life. Octavo original cloth. Presentation copy inscribed by the author on the title page "Elspeth Huxley For Joe Ferrier with gratitude for a continuing interest 1986." The recipient Joe Ferrier was a fan and pen pal of Huxley's. They often exchanged letters books and article clippings between England and the United States. Fine in a fine dust jacket. Nellie and Major Josceline Grant arrived in Thika in what was then British East Africa in 1912 where they became colonial settlers and established a coffee plantation. Their daughter Elspeth had quite an unconventional childhood which she later wrote about in her best known work The Flame Trees of Thika 1959 which examined how unprepared for rustic life the early British settlers really were. Out in the Midday Sun: My Kenya continues the story of Huxley's adult life beginning in 1933 when she returned to Kenya after an interval of eight years. Chatto & Windus hardcover books‎

‎Huxley Elspeth‎

‎The Mottled Lizard.‎

‎London: Chatto & Windus 1962. First edition early printing of one of Huxley's best known works. Octavo original half cloth. Presentation copy inscribed by the author on the half-title page "For Joe Ferrier with gratitude for your interest in my childhood memories - now are half a century old. Elspeth Huxley." Laid in are three typed letters signed by Huxley to Joe Ferrier one of which reads in part "I much appreciate your continuing interest in my writings - as much as I regret the appalling untidiness of this typing. My non-proficiency increases with the years and the typewriter is now nearly as old as I am; a few more years and in this age of word-processors etc.; it may become a valuable antique. With best wishes yours sincerely Elspeth Huxley." The recipient Joe Ferrier was a lifelong pen pal and friend of Huxley's. They often exchanged letters books and article clippings between England and the United States. Fine in a fine dust jacket. Jacket design by Rosemary Grimble. The Mottled Lizard continues the story when the family returns to Kenya after the first world war. Huxley recreates in vivid detail their home native servants hunting expeditions and travels throughout the country. Chatto & Windus hardcover books‎

Octavo original half cloth illustrated with maps and drawings by Jonathan Kingdon. Presentation copy inscribed by the author on the title page "For Joe Ferrier with my best wished Elspeth Huxley." Laid in is the original typed transmittal letter an autograph card and photograph of Huxley; all three signed by her to Ferrier. The recipient Joe Ferrier was a lifelong fan and pen pal of Huxley's.
