Emile Claus 1849-1924 est généralement considéré comme l'un des principaux luministes. Cependant sa carrière traverse un demi-siècle de peinture mouvementé ; il évolue de la période anversoise d'inspiration académique en passant par le naturalisme jusqu'à un impressionnisme personnel particulier. Emile Claus a grandi dans un environnement simple et il lui a fallu beaucoup d'efforts pour convaincre son entourage de ses qualités artistiques. Finalement c'est le compositeur Peter Benoit 1834-1901 un compatriote qui lui ouvre la voie à l'Académie d'Anvers 1869-1874. Malgré de bons résultats il n'a pas participé au Prix de Rome. Sa première exposition a lieu à Gand en 1874 sous le regard approbateur de Nicaise de Keyser 1813-1887 directeur de l'académie d'Anvers dans l'atelier de laquelle il travaille alors. Claus a prolongé son séjour à Anvers et a été influencé par les artistes de l'école dite grise d'Anvers. Durant cette période il reçut également des missions officielles de la ville. L'artiste s'impose comme un portraitiste très recherché au sein de la bourgeoisie anversoise. Peut-être sous l'influence des peintures orientalistes de Charles Verlat 1824-1890 Claus entreprend en 1879 un voyage en Espagne au Maroc et en Algérie. Sur la mer Méditerranée Claus a été surpris par les tonalités colorées intenses et les effets de lumière intenses sur l'environnement. La palette anversoise auparavant plutôt sombre s'éclaire et s'anime grandement dans les études et les peintures de cette période. Il ne faut cependant pas attacher trop dimportance à ce voyage ; Artistiquement Claus a poursuivi le chemin qu'il avait suivi à son retour. 1 Emile Claus cité par Karel van De Deserte dans Werken. Emile Claus 1849-1924 wordt meestal tot de vooraanstaande luministen gerekend. Zijn carrière doorkruist echter een turbulente halve eeuw schilderkunst; hij ontwikkelt zich vanuit de academisch geïnspireerde Antwerpse periode via het naturalisme tot een bijzonder persoonlijk impressionisme. Emile Claus groeide op in een eenvoudig milieu en het kostte hem veel moeite om zijn omgeving te overtuigen van zijn artistieke kwaliteiten. Uiteindelijk effende de componist Peter Benoit 1834-1901 - een streekgenoot - voor hem de weg naar de Antwerpse Academie 1869-1874. Ondanks goede resultaten deed hij niet mee aan de Prijs van Rome. Zijn eerste tentoonstelling vond plaats te Gent in 1874 onder het goedkeurend oog van Nicaise de Keyser 1813-1887 de directeur van de Antwerpse academie in wiens atelier hij op dat moment werkzaam was. Claus verlengde zijn verblijf in Antwerpen en werd er beïnvloed door kunstenaars van de zgn. grijze Antwerpse school. In deze periode kreeg hij ook officiële opdrachten van de stad. Bij de Antwerpse bourgeoisie ontpopte de kunstenaar zich als een veelgevraagd portretschilder. Wellicht onder invloed van oriëntalistische doeken van Charles Verlat 1824-1890 ondernam Claus in 1879 een reis naar Spanje Marokko en Algerije. Aan de Middellandse Zee werd Claus verrast door de heftige koloristische tonaliteiten en de intense lichteffecten op de omgeving. Het tot dan tamelijk sombere Antwerpse palet verheldert en verlevendigt sterk in de studies en schilderijen uit deze periode. Men mag echter aan deze reis niet te veel belang hechten; artistiek vervolgde Claus bij zijn terugkeer de weg die hij voorheen was ingeslagen. 1 Emile Claus geciteerd door karel van de woestijne in Werken.
