<p>Le XVIIe Siècle by Paul Lacroix published in Paris by Firmin-Didot Frères in 1880 remains one of the most ambitious illustrated works on French cultural history of the 17th century. This two-volume set issued in large octavo format covers institutions customs and intellectual life in France between 1590 and 1700. The first volume presents royal aristocratic clerical and popular society through richly descriptive text accompanied by hundreds of engravings and sixteen chromolithograph plates. Subjects include Parisian urban life under Henry IV the regency of Marie de Medici the army of St. Cloud and the relationship between Louis XIII and Richelieu. The second volume "Lettres Sciences et Arts" expands the scope to cultural and scientific developments detailing early Parisian presses French theater and distinctive features in art and painting all supported by seventeen chromolithographs and more than three hundred engravings. Bound in gilt-tooled red leather with marbled boards and gilt edges the set was produced by Firmin-Didot a publisher synonymous with quality printing and fine illustration. Condition: Very Good with bright gilt edges marbled endpapers and secure text blocks the bindings showing only light rubbing consistent with age. Format: Large Octavo two volumes. <p>This 1871 third edition of Paul Lacroix's study of medieval and Renaissance European material culture presents a single large volume bound in gilt-stamped leather spine and red cloth boards with patterned endpapers and bright gilt edges. The publisher Firmin Didot Frères of Paris issued this edition in large octavo format across 548 pages. Topics include early movable type and printing musical instruments such as the syrinx and gigue military traditions of Charlemagne's era and textile and architectural styles including Byzantine and Romanesque forms. Hundreds of engravings depict iconography weaponry costumes and artifacts. Condition: Very Good. The binding remains secure with minor edgewear; page edges remain vibrant. Red cloth boards color and gilt are faded. Internally complete with clean pages and unmarred illustrations. Includes 19 chromolithograph plates as called for which have retained their vibrant color. Hinges are starting but firm. Tear to the spine head cloth of 'Les Arts'. Bookplate of one T & M. Morison to the front pastedowns of 'Les Arts' and 'Moeurs' and bookplate of the Artists' Society of Landham Chambers to 'Jesus Christ'. Internally firmly bound. Two bright volumes from Paul Lacroix's vastly comprehensive and beautifully illustrated Le Moyen Age et La Renaissance. Vie Militaire et Religieuse is a First Edition. Les Arts Au Moyen Age has 19 chromolithographs and over 400 illustrations. Vie Militaire et Religieuse has 14 chromolithographs and over 400 illustrations. There are 'Percival Pearse' booksellers labels on the front endpapers of both volumes. Paul Lacroix 1806 – 1884 was a French author and journalist. Lacroix was an extremely prolific and varied writer. Over twenty historical romances alone came from his pen and he also wrote a variety of serious historical works including a history of Napoleon III and the life and times of the Tsar Nicholas I of Russia. He is best known under his pseudonym of P.L. Jacob bibliophile or Bibliophile Jacob suggested by the constant interest he took in public libraries and books generally. Lacroix was the author of Le moyen âge et la renaissance a standard work on the manners customs and dress of those times the chief merit of which lies in the great number of illustrations it contains. He also wrote many monographs on phases of the history of culture including Manners Custom and Dress During the Middle Ages and During the Renaissance Period. His works on bibliography were also extremely numerous. In 1885 he was appointed librarian of the Arsenal Library Paris. in a half calf binding with gilt lettering. The front outer hinge of Vie Militaire is split and the front inner hinge has failed. There is a chance the front board could detach in the post even after careful packaging. There is some wear to the extremities including some bumping and rubbing with slight discolouration to the boards. There are ink numbers on the spine of Vie Militaire.
