Vor diesem Werk waren Geschichtsbücher eine Liste von politischer und militärischer Geschichte. ‎13 textes reliés en un fort volume in-8 (190 x 122 mm), plein veau brun de l'époque, dos à 5 nerfs richement orné de caissons fleuronnés et cloisonnés, pièce de titre de maroquin rouge, roulette dorée sur les coupes et les chasses, tranches rouges. Recueil constitué à l'époque de 13 textes autour de "l'Oedipe" de Voltaire et de sa réception critique, dont un exemplaire de l'édition originale et un de la seconde édition. Première tragédie de Voltaire qui signe pour la première fois de ce pseudonyme, la pièce fut montée le 18 novembre 1718 à la Comédie Française et rencontra un immense succès. Elle demeura au répertoire jusqu'en 1852. "Voltaire s'éloigne radicalement du mythe par souci de vraisemblance dramatique. Chez lui, Oedipe est innocent. 'Inceste et parricide, et pourtant vertueux': tel est le cri final de celui qui n'aura cessé de lutter contre son destin, refusant de se plier au décret inique des dieux. En cela, Voltaire, en plus de remettre en cause l'univers même de la tragédie, fourbit ses armes contre la superstition, l'intolérance religieuse et le fanatisme (…). En pleine querelle des Anciens et des Modernes, son auteur est consacré du jour au du jour au lendemain comme le grand dramaturge de son temps" (F.-X. Hervoüet). 1- Édition originale. Les feuillets 83 à 131 contiennent six lettres que Voltaire composa pour justifier son traitement en regard des 'Oedipe' de Sophocle et de Corneille. Quelques petites annotations et corrections manuscrites de l'époque. (Bengesco, I, 2). 5- Seconde édition, revue, corrigée et augmentée d'une septième lettre. Les pages 93-130 ont été retirées lors de la reliure, une note manuscrite de l'époque précise que "les 3, 4, 5 et 6e lettres de cette édition sont de même que dans la première édition". Les pages 131 à 134 conservées correspondent à la septième lettre rajoutée dans cette édition. (Bengesco, I, 4). 13- La planche frontispice gravée qui accompagne cette imitation de la tragédie de Voltaire a été placée en tête du volume. Deux pages recto-verso sur une garde détaillent la table de "ce recueil curieux et rare". Petite fente aux mors supérieurs (3 cm), coiffe supérieure frottée. Quelques rousseurs éparses. Très bon exemplaire, bien relié à l'époque.‎
