Printed on handmade paper and illustrated with more than one hundred drawings in the oriental manner by Sylvain Sauvage printed in collotype and hand-colored by Etienne Giradot. A number of the illustrations are of a mildly erotic nature. Issued unsigned after the artist's death. One of three editions in English of Voltaire's only publication on a distinctly economic subject "an immortal satire on physiocracy" Higgs published the same year as the original French language edition published in Geneva the others published in Glasgow and in Dublin. Directed against the physiocracts and against Le Mercier de la Rivière's Ordre naturel et essentiel des sociétés in particular L'Homme aux quarante écus is "the history of the owner of a small estate yielding a net income of forty crowns a year who has been frightened by the appearance of several edicts promulgated 'by a few gentlemen who having some leisure have undertaken to govern the kingdom from their firesides'" Palgrave. Simplicity and lucidity coupled with lively malice and sarcasm First edition in English of Voltaire's incisive exposition of his intellectual project his largest and yet also his most accessible philosophical work structured as a collection of 73 short essays. The Dictionary "consists largely of attacks on religious dogma; at the same time it shows the author's abhorrence of falsehood obscurity and oppression and is written with simplicity and lucidity coupled with lively malice and sarcasm. It was at once ordered to be burnt at Geneva and was subsequently 1765 condemned by the parlement and by Rome" Harvey & Heseltine p. 209. The work was first published in 1764 in Paris. ESTC identifies two editions printed in London in 1765: the other which appears to be a paginary reprint of this edition was done for Thomas Brown. No priority has been established. Octavo 206 x 124 mm pp. iv 335 1. Wood-engraved device to title page. Contemporary sprinkled calf spine ruled in gilt and with red morocco label edges sprinkled red. Contemporary ink signature of one John Hamilton to head of title page. Light rubbing and bumping front joint cracked but holding firm minor browning to contents: a very good copy. ESTC N20652.
