Volney 1757-1820 the French savant undertook a journey to the United States in 1795 where he was accused in 1797 of being a French spy "sent to prepare for the reoccupation of Louisiana by France. He was obliged to return to France in 1798. The results of his travels took form in his Tableau du Climat et du Sol des Etats-Unis 1803" EB-11. Page 186 contains a note from the translator. Both Jefferson and Barlow had translated Volney's Les Ruines ou méditations sur les révolutions des empires published in 1802 in Paris but there's no evidence they had any part in this translation. The translator remains unknown. Evans 29822 records a 1795 edition under a slightly different title no copies located in Evans and of which no copy in OCLC either; this may be a ghost. Three-quarter calf and marbled boards spines gilt leather labels all edges stained red. Hinges rubbed edges and corners slightly worn. Bookplates on front pastedowns. A few scattered fox marks and small dampstains but generally clean. About very good. Volney came to America to avoid imprisonment by the French government and brought with him a large measure of education and sophistication as well as a small bundle of prejudices: he was a vehement anticlericalist and opponent of things Rousseauian. Jefferson felt he might have been a catalyst for the Federalist Alien Acts. There is a small map of North America and a much larger map of the United States all east of the Mississippi. The map of the continent small as it is still represents fairly advanced cartographical knowledge. This copy is of the variant no priority with the Miami vocabulary separately paginated. Fourth edition first issued in 1787 here printed with additional plates. This is a key source for the study of Ottoman Egypt Syria and modern day Lebanon sometimes called the Levant. Volney describes the geography of the region the climate its history cultures the militia economy and trade diseases the monuments natural history politics people law religions farming and agriculture craftsmen merchants commerce arts sciences and character of the inhabitants. All this is set within the presence of the years just prior to the outbreak of the French Revolution which started in 1789. "In 1783 Volney gave up the thought of following any particular profession and set out for the East. He arrived at Cairo ostensibly on a scientific mission although many there regarded him as a spy he was later accused of spying on America by John Adams' administration. In order to master Arabic he shut himself away in a convent for eight months then journeyed to the pyramids at Giza and moved to Suez where he lived with the Bedouin. While there he entertained the notion of constructing a canal to link the Mediterranean with the Red Sea. Sailing from Alexandria in September 1783 he visited Syria and the Lebanon concluding his journey at Acre =Akko in 1785. After a brief halt at Alexandria he returned to France where his documents turned out to be of enormous value in the planning of Napoleon's campaign to Egypt. This copy is undated but the binding suggests a binding typical of much earlier plus there is an owner name dated Shanghai February 22 '76 which by period script and century could only refer to 1876. Seeking the origins of civil society and the causes for its dissolution he saw revolution as a result of the abadoning of the principles of natural law and religion equality and liberty. While visiting Paris in 1793 he was as a Girondist imprisoned during the Reign of Terror. After his release he served as professor of history at the Ecole Normale at Paris and he also visited the United States from 1795 to 1798. Our offering contains the folding map of Syria partially repaired in volume I and three folding plates in volume II; all engraved on copper. The present state of the binding is very rough although the boards are present and barely attached and there is occasional foxing to the contents. Small loss to bottom corner of pp. 187/188. Altogether this set is an excellent candidate for restoration of the binding and has been priced accordingly. Constantin Francois Chasseboeuf the Comte de Volney 1757-1820 was the son of a prosperous lawyer who through the good fortune of the receipt of an inheritance in 1781 was able to set out on an ambitious tour of Syria and Egypt. After a year spent in preparations he departed France with a knapsack on his back a rifle on his shoulder and 6000 livres sewn into a money belt. He then spent the next four years steeping himself in the culture and history of the regions through which he passed. The results of this trip were published in 1787 as 'Voyage en Egypt et en Syrie' our offering being the first English edition of that title. Volney was elected to the Estates General of France in 1789. In 1791 he published his other famous work 'Les Ruines or Meditation sur les Revolutions des Empires' which was translated into English and published the following year 1702. In his lifetime and during the first half of the 19th century Volney's reputation as a 'free thinker' was at its peak although it is now overshadowed by that of Chateuabriand Voltaire and Thomas Paine. <br/><br/>Translated from the original French. A Good X-College Library set. Both volume have do nators bookplates on the front endpapers and empty card pockets on the rear endpapers. Both volumes also have light namestamps for the colle ge on the edge of the page blocks. Vol. 1 has one red name stamp on fr ont fly. As mentioned volume one has had both maps cut out causing th e first page of text to be loose from the binding. Contents on both vo lumes are otherwise clean tight and unmarks. The spine of voume 1 is chipped along the outer edge of the back seam and at the base of the s pine. Corners are rubbed on both volumes and somewhat rounded. Volume 2 is starting to crack along the frnt seam. Red leather title label is missing. There is one 2cm chip on the spine.
