Vor diesem Hintergrund spielt die melodramatische Liebesgeschichte zwischen dem ruhmreichen Tribun Marcus Vinicius und der sch�nen Christin Lygia. Inhalt: Quo vadis spielt zur Zeit Neros 54�68 in Rom. Der junge Patrizier Vinicius verliebt sich in Lygia Christin und Tochter des Lygierk�nigs die in Rom als Geisel gehalten wird. Diese flieht mithilfe ihres Dieners Ursus vor den Zudringlichkeiten von Vinicius zu ihren Glaubensbr�dern. Als Vinicius sich entscheidet zum Christentum �berzutreten um Lygia zu gewinnen l�sst Nero Rom anz�nden: Er sitzt an einem Werk �ber den Untergang Trojas und erhofft sich vom Brand der Stadt dichterische Inspiration. Die Tat lastet er den Christen an. Bei der nun einsetzenden Christenverfolgung werden Lygia und Vincius verhaftet und f�r den Zirkus bestimmt. Ursus rettet Lygia von den H�rnern des Auerochsens woraufhin sie und Vinicius begnadigt werden und zueinander finden. Zentrale Idee und Fokus des Werks ist die Legende nach der der Apostel Petrus auf der Flucht vor der Christenverfolgung und dem zu erwartenden Martyrium Christus begegnet und ihn fragt �Domine quo vadis� �Herr wohin gehst du�. Christus antwortet er gehe nach Rom zu seinem verlassenen Volk um sich ein zweites Mal kreuzigen zu lassen. Besch�mt kehrt darauf Petrus in die Stadt zur�ck und teilt das Schicksal der Christen. Quo vadis ist im doppelten Sinne das Buch eines zu Ende gehenden Zeitalters. Das dekadente gleichzeitig jedoch von Leben pulsierende Rom Neros befindet sich auf dem H�hepunkt seiner Macht. Ihm wird die tugendhafte und sehr junge Christengemeinde gegen�bergestellt. Der Konflikt zwischen den beiden Welten ist auch ein Konflikt zwischen materieller und geistiger Macht. Die r�mische Zivilisation krankt am Sittenverfall der Elite an dem sie auch zu Grunde gehen wird. Der wahnsinnige Kaiser muss zu Gunsten der christlichen Welt abtreten. Da diese aber im Buch keinen w�rdigen Vertreter findet Lygia bleibt in dem Roman eher blass ist Quo vadis eher der Abschied von einer untergehenden Welt als die Begr��ung des Neuen. Aufbau: Quo vadis ist ein Beispiel f�r einen musterg�ltig konstruierten Roman. Der romantische Handlungsfaden der Liebesgeschichte zwischen Vinicius und Lygia ist eng verflochten mit dem Handlungsfaden der Christenverfolgung. Mit diesen beiden Hauptstr�ngen sind verschiedene elegant gef�hrte Nebenstr�nge verzahnt die den Leser an den Hof Neros in den Palast des Petronius in die r�mischen Vorst�dte usw. f�hren. Zahlreiche monumentale Bilder wie das brennende Rom das Amphitheater mit den Gladiatoren oder die Christenverfolgung werden in einer archaisierenden und zugleich anschaulichen Sprache dargestellt. Wirkung: Der Erfolg von Quo vadis war gro�; der Roman wurde in �ber 40 Sprachen �bersetzt f�r die B�hne adaptiert als Oper aufgef�hrt Vertonung durch Henry Cain Text von A. S. J. Brenon Urauff�hrung London 1911 und mehrfach verfilmt u. a. 1951 mit Peter Ustinov in der Rolle des wahnsinnigen Nero und Deborah Kerr als Lydia. 1905 erhielt Sienkiewicz f�r Quo vadis �berraschend den Literaturnobelpreis � �berraschend insofern als damit ein Werk in einer Sprache ausgezeichnet wurde deren Tr�ger keinen eigenen Staat besa�en und die seit �ber 100 Jahren keine Amtssprache mehr war. Gleichzeitig war der Roman Anlass f�r eine weit �ber Polen hinaus gehende Kampagne gegen Sienkiewicz. Dem Autor wurde intellektuelle Oberfl�chlichkeit Unkenntnis der historischen Begebenheiten und Plagiat vorgeworfen.
