‎VAILIMA LETTERS in unbound signatures‎

‎1895. 1/100 in unbound signatures Being Correspondence addressed by Robert Louis Stevenson to Sidney Colvin. November 1890 - October 1894. In Two Volumes. Chicago: Stone & Kimball 1895. Original folded unbound signatures. First Edition Large Paper Issue consisting of 100 numbered copies on John Dickinson & Co. paper -- this copy unnumbered and in fact still in its unbound signatures. VAILIMA LETTERS was published in Chicago in late October 1895 about a week before the London edition in the year following Stevenson's death; "Vailima" "five rivers" was the name Stevenson gave to the home he and his family made for themselves in Samoa. This is a remarkable never-issued copy a complete set of the folded sheets which never went to the binder -- where the two volumes would have been bound in grey paper-covered boards and where each volume would have had a frontispiece inserted here absent. Condition is just about fine one small damp-mark at the top edge of the first couplet of Vol I. Beinecke Yale 610; Princeton 60A. Housed in a cloth slipcase with leather labels with two inner chemises. unknown books‎

‎VIRGINIBUS PUERISQUE and Other Papers‎

‎1881. London: C. Kegan Paul & Co. 1881. 32 pp ads dated July 1881. Original orange cloth decorated in black beveled. First Edition first issue of Stevenson's first volume of collected essays which had appeared in periodicals such as The Cornhill during the late 1870s. These essays epitomize Stevenson's early expository style. It is good to have been young in youth and as years go on to grow older. These papers are like milestones on the wayside of my life. from this book's dedication to W.E. Henley The title essay Latin for "For Girls and Boys" which he wrote in 1876 as his relationship with Mrs. Sitwell was waning before he met Fanny Osbourne is largely upon the subject of marriage. The first issue is identifiable by the "C. Kegan Paul & Co." at the foot of the spine -- the same as on the title page; later copies bound up read "Kegan Paul Trench & Co." reflecting the firm's change of name and still later copies read "Chatto & Windus" after that firm bought up Kegan Paul. The book was not a hot seller: it is known that by 1884 when Chatto & Windus issued the remaining copies only 900 copies had been sold first and second bindings combined. The ads in this copy are dated July 1881 some copies have April 1881 ads the month of publication while others have leftover ads from 1880 or as implied above ads from later years. This is a very good-plus copy with some cracking of the endpapers and as usual with the unfortunate choice of cloth color general dulling of the light-orange spine. Beinecke 70 with 8/80 ads; Princeton 12 copy 2 7/81 ads. Housed in a cloth clamshell case.

hardcover books‎

‎VIRGINIBUS PUERISQUE AND OTHER PAPERS‎

‎London: Chatto & Windus 1887. Small octavo. Original polished brick-red buckram t.e.g. others untrimmed. From the collection of Arthur H. Houghton with his book label on front pastedown. Cloth evidently treated at an early date with some sort of shellac-like fixative a bit faded and worn with offsetting to endsheets and short crack at toe of front inner hinge otherwise a good sound copy. Second edition regular English issue. Presentation copy inscribed by the author on the half-title: "To my mother Robert Louis Stevenson." According to the Chatto and Windus stock book 1000 copies of this edition were printed. The first edition appeared in 1881. Margaret Isabella Balfour Stevenson 1829-1897 or "Maggie" as she was known to her family married Thomas Stevenson in 1848 and gave birth to RLS in 1850. She had a strong and loving relationship with her son. Although quarrels between RLS and his father about religion his career and his marriage were upsetting to the family the family remained close. After her husband died in 1887 Maggie went with RLS and Fanny on their travels to America and the South Seas and even settled with them in Vailima. She returned to Edinburgh to live with her sister after RLS died. BEINECKE 74. Chatto & Windus hardcover books‎
