Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde bound with The Merry Men and Other Tales and Fables; and separate copy bound with The Master of Ballantrae 2 uniform volumes each containing a copy of Jekyll & Hyde
New York: A. L. Burt TWO RARE VARIANT PIRACIES OF A MUCH BELOVED TALE OF DRUG EXPERIMENTATION GONE AWRY! ! N.d. ca. 1895-1900 Two volumes uniformly bound. Green cloth gilt titles rules gilt decorations to spine. Pagination as follows: The Merry Men 236 pp. also includes the following fables: Will o' the Mill; Markheim; Thrawn Janet; Olalla; The Treasure of Franchard; Dr Jekyll & Mr. Hyde 6 81 pp.; with separate title page & prelims.; 3 pp. pub. cat. at rear; SECOND VOLUME: The Master of Ballantrae AND Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde 416 pp. pagination unbroken in this vol. Both very nicely preserved copies showing only the merest signs of age to paper & near-invisible shelf-wear - seldom seen in such NEAR-PRISTINE CONDITION! Two odd early variant editions of this Haycraft-Queen cornerstone by A.L. Burt - these editions being from a uniformly bound collected edition of Stevenson's works. As is common with unauthorized editions piracies these hastily & cheaply bound books offer a fascinating source of biblio-blunder mysteriosa: why did Burt publish the same title in two separate volumes of the same uniform series why does one issue have its own title page table of contents & pagination while the other has unbroken pagination-as if Dr.J/Mr.H was merely an end chapter of Master of Ballantrae are these unrecorded editions What intrepid scholar dare solve the mystery held in these strange editions of a little novelette that has had such a profound effect on the Modern imagination ! Kindly enquire about other Stevenson titles in this uniformly bound series - some equally as confusing. Early Edition. Cloth. Near Fine. 12mo. Fantastic Fiction Classic. A. L. Burt hardcover
