THE WAIF WOMAN
1916. London: Chatto & Windus 1916. Original grey boards with violet cloth spine with dust jacket. First Edition of this "folk tale of old Iceland in the author's best manner which has lately been discovered among the papers of the late Mrs. Stevenson and is now for the first time issued in book form." There were 4000 copies issued uniform with ON THE CHOICE OF A PROFESSION. This is a fine copy in the scarce dust jacket which is in very good condition minor wear at the head of its spine spine lettering faded. Beinecke 703; Princeton 89. unknown books

ISLAND NIGHTS' ENTERTAINMENTS
1893. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons 1893. Original tan cloth decorated in brown and black. First Edition published five days before the English one. This collection consists of "The Beach at Falesa" "The Bottle Imp" and "The Isle of Voices"; the middle one is one of Stevenson's weirdest tales -- a supernatural blend of Aladdin's lamp the monkey's paw and a game of hot potato. Included are 26 illustrations. This is a very good-plus copy of this busily-decorated volume with scarcely any wear but as usual for this cloth the spine is sunned. This American edition is not at all common: we see at least five English copies for every American one. Beinecke 575; Princeton 53. Provenance: armorial bookplate of Gilbert Burgess who was a literary and dramatic critic for London Sketch perhaps best-known for his interviews with Oscar Wilde. unknown books

VAILIMA LETTERS in unbound signatures
1895. 1/100 in unbound signatures Being Correspondence addressed by Robert Louis Stevenson to Sidney Colvin. November 1890 - October 1894. In Two Volumes. Chicago: Stone & Kimball 1895. Original folded unbound signatures. First Edition Large Paper Issue consisting of 100 numbered copies on John Dickinson & Co. paper -- this copy unnumbered and in fact still in its unbound signatures. VAILIMA LETTERS was published in Chicago in late October 1895 about a week before the London edition in the year following Stevenson's death; "Vailima" "five rivers" was the name Stevenson gave to the home he and his family made for themselves in Samoa. This is a remarkable never-issued copy a complete set of the folded sheets which never went to the binder -- where the two volumes would have been bound in grey paper-covered boards and where each volume would have had a frontispiece inserted here absent. Condition is just about fine one small damp-mark at the top edge of the first couplet of Vol I. Beinecke Yale 610; Princeton 60A. Housed in a cloth slipcase with leather labels with two inner chemises. unknown books

ISLAND NIGHTS' ENTERTAINMENTS
1893. Consisting of The Beach of Falesa / The Bottle Imp / The Isle of Voices. With Illustrations by Gordon Browne and W. Hatherell. London Paris & Melbourne: Cassell & Company 1893. 16 pp ads dated Mar 1893. Original blue-grey cloth pictorially decorated in gilt. First English Edition published five days after the American. "The Bottle Imp" is one of Stevenson's weirdest tales -- a supernatural blend of Aladdin's lamp the monkey's paw and a game of hot potato. As with most if not all copies the book's price on the preliminary ad leaf was raised by hand. Some copies have ads dated as early as Sept 1892; however since the book wasn't published until early April 1893 we would regard the ads in this copy March 1893 as "primary." This is a near-fine copy minor cracking of the rear endpaper spine very slightly darkened. Beinecke 577; Princeton 53A copies 2-3. unknown books

THE MERRY MEN and Other Tales and Fables
1887. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons 1887. 4 pp undated ads. Original printed yellow wrappers. First American Edition of this collection of tales some of which like "Thrawn Janet" and "Markham" are along the same vein as JEKYLL AND HYDE - Stevenson called such stories his "creepers." This copy is in yellow wrappers others were bound in red cloth and offered at a higher price. This is a very good copy with minor soil wrinkling and edge-wear of the very delicate wrapper -- rather remarkable condition actually for so fragile a volume. In our experience the American edition in cloth or especially in wrappers is much scarcer than the English one even on this side of the Atlantic. Beinecke 413; Princeton 33A copy 2. unknown books

THE MASTER OF BALLANTRAE
1889. A Winter's Tale. London Paris New York & Melbourne: Cassell & Company 1889. 4 pp undated ads plus 16 pp ads dated July 1889. Original red cloth pictorially decorated in black. First Edition published on the day before the Scribner's one with the proper July ads. Stevenson freely acknowledged that his inspiration for this book was Robert Marryat's THE PHANTOM SHIP 1839 which he had recently read. RLS began writing BALLANTRAE in Saranac Lake in 1887 but did not finish it until his first South Seas voyage in 1889. The verso of this copy's front free endpaper lists only ten titles; some copies have a list of twelve or fourteen priority unknown but fewest should be best. A tough book to find in decent condition this copy is very good-plus spine a little faded and dull minor soil -- also the leaves were roughly opened in one case affecting text. Beinecke 487 cites only a copy listing 14 titles; Princeton 41A copy 1 -- mentions copies with all three lists. unknown books

THE BLACK ARROW
1888. A Tale of the Two Roses. London Paris New York & Melbourne: Cassell & Company 1888. 4 pp undated ads plus 16 pp ads dated July 1888. Original red cloth decorated in black. First English Edition of this historical tale of adventure and romance published about six weeks after the New York one. Stevenson wrote this entire novel in the Spring of 1883 for serial appearance in "Young Folks" where TREASURE ISLAND had then just appeared likewise by "Capt. George North". He wrote not only rapidly but also carelessly: proofreaders had to alert him to inconsistencies in his plot and characters. Stevenson derided the work as "tushery"; neither he nor his British publisher considered it worth publishing in book form. However in 1887 the American publisher McClure sought it out for American serialization which in turn prompted Scribner's to publish it followed by Cassell. A tough book to find in truly fine condition this one is very good-plus with minor cover soil and fading but very little wear other than a cracked front endpaper. Beinecke 481 these July ads; Princeton 40A. unknown books

In this copy page 7 is paginated; in some it is not. This is a fine copy; the scarce dust jacket is in very good condition with minor soil but with very little wear -- it is usually not even present. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons 1886. First Edition. Fine. First American edition first printing; precedes the London edition by four days. Bound in publisher's greenish-gray cloth stamped in gilt top edge gilt. Fine with trivial touches of wear to cloth name erased from top of title page pages lightly toned. NEW ARABIAN NIGHTS
1882. New York: Henry Holt and Company 1882. Undated endpaper ads. Original mustard yellow cloth decorated in black. First American hardbound edition issued as No. 141 in the Leisure Hour Series; George Munro's pirated "Seaside Library" edition with triple-column text in a magazine-sized format was listed in Publisher's Weekly a week earlier -- though actual dates of publication are not known. NEW ARABIAN NIGHTS published in the U. K. as Stevenson's only multi-volume first edition consists of "The Suicide Club" three loosely-connected tales "The Rajah's Diamond" four loosely-connected tales "The Pavilion on the Links" plus three short French tales. Calder has observed that although RLS was very fond of these tales himself they "rest uneasily in a limbo between fantasy and psychological realism." This is a clean attractive copy in fine condition -- quite remarkable for one of these delicate pale-colored volumes of the Leisure Hour Series the same series that contains the first American editions of most of Thomas Hardy's novels. Beinecke 142; Princeton 17A; Queen's Quorum 11 "Conan Doyle considered The Pavilion on the Links 'the very model of dramatic narrative'". unknown books

THE BLACK ARROW. A Tale of the Two Roses
1888. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons 1888. 8 pp undated ads. Original printed yellow wrappers. First Edition published about six weeks before the London edition. Unlike the English one the American edition is illustrated twelve plates; it was also issued at a higher price in red cloth no precedence. Stevenson wrote this entire novel in the Spring of 1883 for serial appearance in "Young Folks" where TREASURE ISLAND had then just appeared. He wrote not only rapidly but also carelessly: proofreaders had to alert him to inconsistencies in his plot and characters. Stevenson derided the work as "tushery"; neither he nor his British publisher considered it worth publishing in book form. However in 1887 the American publisher McClure sought it out for American serialization which prompted Scribner's to publish it in book form which in turn prompted Stevenson's publisher Cassell in London.
