STRANGE CASE OF DR JEKYLL AND MR HYDE
1886. London: Longmans Green and Co. 1886. One page undated ads. Original salmon cloth. First English Edition which according to McKay was published on 9 January 1886 -- four days after the American one Longmans had intended to publish it in December 1885 but the bookstalls were already so full of Christmas numbers that the trade "would not look at it". The story of how RLS came to write this classic tale is by now well known: He was one night in the middle of a nightmare when Fanny alarmed by his disturbance woke him. Louis complained with irritation that she had interrupted a 'fine bogy tale.' Seizing his pen the following day he began to write down the story he had dreamed. Initially it was the Gothic horror of the story that excited him and he produced a first draft at great speed reading the story triumphantly to Fanny when he finished. But Fanny wasn't happy with the story. She felt that it could be more than a Poe-like crawler that it could be more morally pointed than Louis had fashioned it. Certainly in this case it can only be said that her comments did the story and Louis considerable good. Angrily the first draft was cast into the fire and he started again this time producing the version of STRANGE CASE OF DR JEKYLL AND MR HYDE that we know. Calder What an imagination! -- hard to believe that this is the same writer who came up with another book published by Longmans Green just one year earlier and here promoted on the ad leaf: A CHILD'S GARDEN OF VERSES. This is a very good-plus copy of what was a very cheaply-produced book: there is minor soil as usual for this light salmon cloth and slight bubbling of the cloth due to the semi-flexible nature of the boards. The original patterned endpapers are fine and there is no foxing on the leaves within. McKay Beinecke/Yale 348; Princeton 30A copy 1. Housed in a handsome calf-backed slipcase with leather label with inner chemise. unknown books

TREASURE ISLAND
1883. London Paris & New York: Cassell & Company 1883. 4 pp ads dated July 1883. Original forest green cloth. First Edition earliest date of ads of this classic. In late 1881 Stevenson wrote this tale titled THE SEA COOK merely as an amusement for his 12-year-old stepson. It was accepted for serial publication pseudonymously by "Captain George North" in Young Folks magazine the editor of which recommended the change of title to TREASURE ISLAND -- which Stevenson had used as the name of the island but not of the book. W.E. Henley at Cassell's then negotiated the book publication: Stevenson initially received 100 pounds "a sight more than TREASURE ISLAND is worth" he told Henley. The first edition consisted of 2000 copies which were issued in four binding orders between 14 November and 11 December 1883. Some copies have ads curiously dated July 1883 while the majority has ads more properly dated October or December 1883. This copy does have the earliest July ads -- though it does not necessarily follow that these were the first bound up. In this copy the "8" is missing from the p. 83 pagination and the "7" is boldly printed in the p. 127 pagination both defects are related to type slippage during the 2000-copy printing; there seems to be no correlation between these defects and the ad dates or the cloth colors. Some dealers persist in citing "dead man's chest" and a few other misspellings as issue points -- which they are not since every first edition copy has them. This copy is in forest green cloth we have also had red blue terra-cotta and sage green -- no priority. The volume is in very good condition neatly though unnecessarily re-backed -- one cannot see but can feel something extraneous under the spine cloth; the original black-coated endpapers were retained with thin slivers of matching paper at the two gutters. As always with this book the volume is slightly askew; there are a few light scratches and there is minor rubbing at the extremities but this is highly-acceptable copy of a book increasingly difficult to find in desirable condition. Beinecke Yale 240; Princeton 22. unknown books

Strange Adventures of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde
This classic novel which apparently came to the author in a dream was originally meant to be published for Christmas of 1885; however since there was a glut of books on the market at that time the publishers decided to hold the release date until 1886.
This is one of an unspecified number of copies to have had the date changed in ink by the publisher from 1885 to 1886 the numeral 5 into the numeral 6.
The ownership signature is that of the famed Richard Garnett noted British poet editor and librarian. ACROSS THE PLAINS
1892. With Other Memories and Essays. London: Chatto & Windus 1892. Original very dark blue cloth beveled. First Edition English -- published on the same day as the American. This volume consists largely of Stevenson's thoughts as he journeyed by train in 1879 from New York to San Francisco in pursuit of the American woman he had recently met on the Continent and who was to become his wife. Also included are his subsequent impressions of the city of Monterey. This is a near-fine copy endpapers cracking but scarcely any other wear; the front paste-down bears the small leather bookplate of Clara & Irwin Strasburger. VIRGINIBUS PUERISQUE and Other Papers
1881. London: C. Kegan Paul & Co. 1881. 32 pp ads dated July 1881. Original orange cloth decorated in black beveled. First Edition first issue of Stevenson's first volume of collected essays which had appeared in periodicals such as The Cornhill during the late 1870s. These essays epitomize Stevenson's early expository style. It is good to have been young in youth and as years go on to grow older. These papers are like milestones on the wayside of my life. from this book's dedication to W.E. Henley The title essay Latin for "For Girls and Boys" which he wrote in 1876 as his relationship with Mrs. Sitwell was waning before he met Fanny Osbourne is largely upon the subject of marriage. The first issue is identifiable by the "C. Kegan Paul & Co." at the foot of the spine -- the same as on the title page; later copies bound up read "Kegan Paul Trench & Co." reflecting the firm's change of name and still later copies read "Chatto & Windus" after that firm bought up Kegan Paul. The book was not a hot seller: it is known that by 1884 when Chatto & Windus issued the remaining copies only 900 copies had been sold first and second bindings combined. The ads in this copy are dated July 1881 some copies have April 1881 ads the month of publication while others have leftover ads from 1880 or as implied above ads from later years. This is a very good-plus copy with some cracking of the endpapers and as usual with the unfortunate choice of cloth color general dulling of the light-orange spine. Beinecke 70 with 8/80 ads; Princeton 12 copy 2 7/81 ads. Housed in a cloth clamshell case.

hardcover books

THE MASTER OF BALLANTRAE
1889. A Winter's Tale. London Paris New York & Melbourne: Cassell & Company 1889. 4 pp undated ads plus 16 pp ads dated July 1889. Original red cloth pictorially decorated in black. First Edition published on the day before Scribner's American edition. Stevenson freely acknowledged that his inspiration for this novel was Robert Marryat's THE PHANTOM SHIP 1839 which he had recently read. RLS began writing BALLANTRAE in Saranac Lake in 1887 but did not finish it until his first South Seas voyage in 1889. This copy has the usual proper July 1889 ads; the front free endpaper lists fourteen titles where some copies have a list of ten or twelve priority uncertain. This is a bright very good-plus copy spine slightly darkened rear endpaper cracking -- and see note regarding title page below. This is not a scarce book but it usually turns up in miserable condition; we have never seen a truly fine copy. Beinecke 487; Princeton 41A. Provenance: armorial bookplate of C.H. Waterland Mander who wrote numerous accounts about a century ago such as a 1918 History of the London Guild of Cordwainers; in the upper margin of the title page he also affixed a small version of the family arms plus his printed address.

hardcover books

THE BLACK ARROW
1888. A Tale of the Two Roses. London Paris New York & Melbourne: Cassell & Company 1888. 4 pp undated ads plus 16 pp ads dated July 1888. Original red cloth decorated in black. First English Edition of this historical tale of adventure and romance published about six weeks after the New York one. Stevenson wrote this entire novel in the Spring of 1883 for serial appearance in "Young Folks" where TREASURE ISLAND had then just appeared likewise by "Capt. George North". He wrote not only rapidly but also carelessly: proofreaders had to alert him to inconsistencies in his plot and characters. Stevenson derided the work as "tushery"; neither he nor his British publisher considered it worth publishing in book form. However in 1887 the American publisher McClure sought it out for American serialization which in turn prompted Scribner's to publish it followed by Cassell. A tough book to find in truly fine condition this one is near-fine volume slightly askew as usual less cover soil than usual for this bright red cloth; the delicate patterned endpapers are intact. THE BODY-SNATCHER
1895. Illustrated. New York: The Merriam Company n.d. 1895. 3 pp undated ads. Original violet cloth decorated in dark violet. First Edition issued as the second volume in Merriam's "Violet Series." This is Stevenson's famous tale about the anatomist "K---" and his need for cadavres based undoubtedly upon the career of Robert Knox 1793-1862; the 1945 film of the same title starred Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi. RLS actually wrote this tale in mid-1881 to be part of a collection of supernatural tales which he referred to as "creepers"; he never completed the project but a few of the tales remain. Ironically this grisly tale's first appearance was in the Pall Mall Gazette's 1884 Christmas Extra substituted at the last moment for a briefer RLS tale in order to fulfill a commitment of sufficient length. It is equally ironic that such a grisly story would first appear in book form in this cute little violet volume decorated with flowers. This is an attractive nearly fine copy unusually free of soil or wear the lettering on the spine is a little faded as always and there are small tape-stains on the endpapers; there is no bubbling of the cloth which is atypical for this book. Publisher's Receipt Signed -- for "A Song of the Road"
1885. One 5"x8" printed receipt form with the date amount and applicable poems entered by secretarial hand then signed in full by Stevenson. London: Cassell & Company 23 December 1885. This receipt acknowledges payment of two guineas to Stevenson for "the use of my Poem entitled 'A Song of the Road' in 'The Magazine of Art' appearing in Part 63." This poem of seven four-line stanzas did indeed appear in the January 1886 issue of that magazine and was then in 1887 included in the Stevenson volume of verse UNDERWOODS published by Chatto & Windus. At the end of this poem in that volume it reads "Forest of Montargis 1878" -- for RLS wrote the first version of this poem after his 1875 walking tour around France. He then called it in his notebook now at Yale "The Gauger's Flute" -- as the poem is about a gauger excise officer who plays on his flute a refrain "Over the hills and far away" as a warning when he approaches his friend's hidden distillery. Interestingly this is one of the poems that RLS put to music late in life when he learned to play a "flageolet" -- essentially a pennywhistle with keys. The receipt is in near-fine condition with a couple of small edge-chips; the receipt was folded and notated by the publisher's staff for filing purposes. It provides a clear full signature of Stevenson.

unknown books
