Stevenson Robert Louis; Epstein Perry Introduction
The San Francisco of Robert Louis Stevenson Association copy
San Francisco: Privately Printed by Haywood H. Hunt 1923. Hardcover. Fine. Rauschnabel W. F. Octavo size 34 pp. signed by the printer. Robert Louis Stevenson 1850-1894 came to San Francisco in December of 1879 where he married Fanny Osbourne the next May; his observations of San Francisco are keen and fresh. Speaking of the citizens of the city he writes "The shops along the street are like the consulates of different nations. The passers-by vary in feature like the slides of a magic lantern. For we are here in that city of gold to which adventurers congregated out of all the winds of heaven; we are in a land that till the other day was ruled and peopled by the countrymen of Cortex; and the sea that leaves the piers of San Francisco is the ocean of the East and of the isles of summer". This volume is a presentation copy from the printer Haywood H. Hunt to fellow printer Alfred Roy Wilkins printed presentation label on front paste-down endpaper who was a noted San Francisco printer in the early twentieth century. ___DESCRIPTION: Full moss green paper small pictorial paper label of a sailing ship on the front green lettering on the spine printed label on the front pastedown presenting this volume to Alfred Roy Wilkins lettered tissue-guarded frontispiece an illustration by W.
