Stevenson Robert Louis; Sumner Heywood
RARE: Original Plans for an Addition to Skerryvore Together With Original Plans for Improvements to Middle Road Showing Robert Louis Stevenson as owner of Skerryvore and showing the Owners and Tenants of Neighboring Properties Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
Bournemouth. Very good . RARE: ORIGINAL PLANS FOR AN ADDITION TO SKERRYVORE Robert Louis Stevenson's home in Bournemouth where John Singer Sargent painted Stevenson and his wife and where Stevenson had the famous dream which inspired his great work "Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" which tale among other great works he wrote at Skerryvore. The Plans were prepared in 1900 for Heywood Sumner Esq. a successor in ownership for the addition of a Studio to the house. Heywood Sumner -- George Heywood Maunoir Sumner -- was the well-known English painter illustrator and art-craftsman who was closely involved with the Arts and Crafts movement and the late-Victorian London art world. Sumner who was qualified as a Barrister also employed much of his time as an amateur archaeologist geologist naturalist and folklorist. Skerryvore whose lawns ran down from the house to Alum Chine Road is where Stevenson lived from 1885 until his departure for Samoa where he died in 1894. Thus the Plans were prepared soon after his departure and show the house as it existed when Stevenson owned it together with the proposed Studio addition. A "wedding present" from Stevenson's father to Stevenson and his wife Fanny approximately four years after their marriage -- most likely the father's attempt to keep his peripatetic son near to him in his last years -- Stevenson came to legal ownership of it upon his father's death in 1887. Named after "Skerryvore" the tallest lighthouse in Scotland and one designed by his uncle Alan Stevenson who like Stevenson's father was a leading lighthouse engineer the house was destroyed by German bombs on November 16 1940. There now stands in its place a memorial garden containing a statue of the lighthouse for which the home was named. One frame measures approximately 28 3/4 inches x approximately 20 inches and the other frame measures approximately 15 1/8 inches x 29 7/8 inches. With some tears and minor loss these ORIGINAL PLANS are in quite nice condition overall are UNIQUE TO THE MARKET and likely comprise the only plans for this important house available or hereafter likely to be available for purchase. TOGETHER WITH: Original Plans comprised of two sheets for Improvements to Middle Road Showing Robert Louis Stevenson as owner of Skerryvore and showing the Owners and Tenants of Neighboring Properties. The first page of the Plans for the Middle Road Improvements are dated January 6 1885. With some tears minor loss and fold lines these ORIGINAL PLANS are in quite nice condition overall and are unique to the market. Each page has been archivally mounted to and removable from a white archival non-wooden board. The front and smaller sheet measures approximately 27 inches x approximately 35 inches and the second and larger sheet measures approximately 40 1/2 inches x 26 3/4 inches. Notably they show the names of the owners of the properties along Middle Road as well as the residents of such properties who were neighbors to Stevenson's Skerryvore property and show Skerryvore as the property of "R. L. Stevenson". Presumably many if not all of the residents along Middle Road named on the Plans certainly would have been in residence there when Stevenson and his bride took possession of Skerryvore in April 1885. Each of the four sheets show some relevant stamps and relevant pencil notes. Altogether these Plans constitute an important record of Stevenson's home a LITERARY LANDMARK and a rare opportunity for the Collector. A WONDERFUL GROUP OF RARE ROBERT LOUIS STEVENSON ITEMS. RARE INDEED. PLEASE NOTE: Buyer's shipping cost for this group will exceed the shipping cost quoted by this site as the items with protective packaging together weigh approximately 55 pounds. THE SUICIDE CLUB and THE RAJAH'S DIAMOND
1896. New York: George Munro's Sons n.d. March 13 1896 at the top of the front wrapper. 18 pp ads some dated June 1900. Original tan paper wrappers printed in black. First American edition to consist solely of these two groups of mysterious detective tales which had originally constituted the first volume of NEW ARABIAN NIGHTS 1882 -- in fact the running head on each page of text is that title. At that time Henry Holt published an American edition of that title including these two. It was not until 1894 that Chatto & Windus in response to the popularity of the Sherlock Holmes cases published just these two tales -- and this volume by Munro was in turn a response to that. "The Suicide Club" is actually three loosely-connected detective cases -- "Story of the Young Man with the Cream Tarts" "Story of the Physician and the Saratoga Trunk" and "The Adventure of the Hansom Cabs"; similarly "The Rajah's Diamond" follows a valuable diamond through four separate unpleasant adventures ultimately requiring the ingenuity of a detective. Despite the March 1896 date at the top of the front wrapper this copy was actually bound up a few years later as some ads are dated June 1900. This is a remarkably close-to-fine copy just a hint of wear at some corners -- of a Stevenson title that is none-too-common. Beinecke 151.

unknown

First Edition which consisted of 2675 copies preceding the 1898 English edition. Stevenson wrote this at intervals between January 1893 and October 1894 laying it aside six weeks before his death to work on WEIR OF HERMISTON. As pointed out in an editorial note A.T. Quiller-Couch wrote the final six chapters from notes and outlines left by Stevenson. Though the binding design does not bear her initials it is by Margaret Armstrong. This is a close-to-fine copy a few trifling marks on the rear cover. Beinecke Yale 654; Princeton 68; Gullans & Espey 244.

hardcover

ISLAND NIGHTS' ENTERTAINMENTS
1893. Consisting of The Beach of Falesa / The Bottle Imp / The Isle of Voices. With Illustrations by Gordon Browne and W. Hatherell. London Paris & Melbourne: Cassell & Company 1893. 16 pp ads dated Mar 1893. Original blue-grey cloth pictorially decorated in gilt. First English Edition published five days after the American. "The Bottle Imp" is one of Stevenson's weirdest tales -- a supernatural blend of Aladdin's lamp the monkey's paw and a game of hot potato. As with most if not all copies the book's price on the preliminary ad leaf was raised by hand. Some copies have ads dated as early as Sept 1892; however since the book wasn't published until early April 1893 we would regard the ads in this copy March 1893 as "primary." This is a near-fine copy minor cracking of the rear endpaper spine very slightly darkened. Beinecke 577; Princeton 53A copies 2-3.

hardcover

THE MERRY MEN and Other Tales and Fables
1887. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons 1887. 4 pp undated ads. Original printed yellow wrappers. First American Edition of this collection of tales some of which like "Thrawn Janet" and "Markham" are along the same vein as JEKYLL AND HYDE - Stevenson called such stories his "creepers." This copy is in yellow wrappers others were bound in red cloth and offered at a higher price. This is a very good copy with minor soil wrinkling and edge-wear of the very delicate wrapper -- rather remarkable condition actually for so fragile a volume. In our experience the American edition in cloth or especially in wrappers is much scarcer than the English one even on this side of the Atlantic. KIDNAPPED
1887. being Memoirs of the Adventures of David Balfour in the Year 1751. Written by Himself. Illustrated. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons 1887. Original brown cloth pictorially decorated in black. First American Illustrated Edition. In July 1886 the first English and American editions unillustrated except for a map frontispiece were published on the same day. In mid-1887 the first English illustrated edition was published -- actually a later issue of the first edition with W.H. Hole plates inserted. This Scribner's edition with the W.H. Hole plates was undoubtedly issued at about the same time -- perhaps slightly earlier curiously this Scribner's edition is absent from the exhaustive Beinecke collection. This is an attractive near-fine copy spine very slightly dulled a touch of rubbing at the extremities of what we consider to be a none-too-common book. THE MASTER OF BALLANTRAE
1889. A Winter's Tale. London Paris New York & Melbourne: Cassell & Company 1889. 4 pp undated ads plus 16 pp ads dated July 1889. Original red cloth pictorially decorated in black. First Edition published on the day before the Scribner's one with the proper July ads. Stevenson freely acknowledged that his inspiration for this book was Robert Marryat's THE PHANTOM SHIP 1839 which he had recently read. RLS began writing BALLANTRAE in Saranac Lake in 1887 but did not finish it until his first South Seas voyage in 1889. The verso of this copy's front free endpaper lists only ten titles; some copies have a list of twelve or fourteen priority unknown but fewest should be best. A tough book to find in decent condition this copy is very good-plus spine a little faded and dull minor soil -- also the leaves were roughly opened in one case affecting text. Beinecke 487 cites only a copy listing 14 titles; Princeton 41A copy 1 -- mentions copies with all three lists.

hardcover

ON THE CHOICE OF A PROFESSION
1916. London: Chatto & Windus 1916. Original grey boards with purple cloth spine with dust jacket. First Edition of this essay that had lain dormant among Mrs. Stevenson's papers; after her death her son Lloyd Osbourne had it published 4000 copies with his own preface -- uniform with THE WAIF WOMAN. In this copy page 7 is paginated; in some it is not. This is a fine copy; the scarce dust jacket is in very good condition with minor soil but with very little wear -- it is usually not even present. Beinecke 702; Princeton 88.

hardcover

FATHER DAMIEN
1890. An Open Letter to the Reverend Doctor Hyde of Honolulu. London: Chatto and Windus 1890. Original brown wrappers. First Trade Edition consisting of 1000 copies preceded only by 25 copies issued in Sydney and 30 issued in Edinburgh. On the Stevensons' voyage to the South Pacific they had visited the leper colony on Molokai founded by Dr. Damien who had himself died of leprosy the year before they arrived. A missionary named Hyde wrote a letter denouncing Damien; this piece is Stevenson's open and irate reply to Hyde. It was first published 25 copies when the Stevenson party arrived in Sydney; Stevenson boasted of it as being blatantly libellous. This is a very good copy of this fragile piece a few wrapper corners chipped away some wear to the fragile spine. Beinecke 510; Princeton 44B.

unknown

Some copies have ads dated as early as Sept 1892; however since the book wasn't published until early April 1893 we would regard the ads in this copy as "primary." This is a bright near-fine copy light bubbling of the cloth near the top of each cover front endpaper cracking. Beinecke 577; Princeton 53A copies 2-3.

hardcover

THE MERRY MEN and Other Tales and Fables
1887. London: Chatto & Windus 1887. 32 pp ads dated Sept 1886. Original blue cloth decorated in silver and black. First Edition of this handsomely-bound collection of tales some of which like "Thrawn Janet" are along the same vein as JEKYLL AND HYDE -- Stevenson called such stories his "creepers." This copy has the earliest ad catalogue and light green patterned endpapers some copies have light grey -- no priority; it is in near-fine condition with scarcely any wear and with the silver stars still fairly bright. AN INLAND VOYAGE
1883. Boston: Roberts Brothers 1883. 10 pp undated ads. Original bright green cloth decorated in black and gilt. First American Edition of Stevenson's first book published five years after the London edition. Stevenson's third book TRAVELS WITH A DONKEY was published in 1879 both in London and in Boston -- making it Stevenson's first book to appear in America. This copy is bound in bright green cloth decorated with black lines and a front cover vignette in gilt. Although this is the only color referred to in both the Beinecke and the Parrish collections we have seen it also in olive-brown terra-cotta and aqua-blue presumably no priority. This is an unusually fine bright copy essentially without soil or wear at all and with the cover gilt remarkably bright. We have not had a better copy. Beinecke 14; Princeton 6B.

hardcover
