Ernst Arnold Egli war österreichisch-schweizerischer Architekt und Stadtplaner in Wien und Zürich. Egli lebte lange in der Türkei, wo er den Großteil seines gebauten Werkes schuf. Er war 1924-27 Assistent von Clemens Holzmeister an der Wiener Akademie und kam auf dessen Empfehlung 1927 in die Türkei. Beider Arbeit beeinflusste maßgeblich den kemalistischen Aufbau des neuen Ankara in den Jahren 1927-1938. Von Mustafa Kemal Pascha ausdrücklich mit der Entwicklung einer modernen Architektur für den Schulbau beauftragt, prägte er die Moderne in der Türkei wesentlich. 1936-1937 errichtete er einige Bauten in der Atatürk-Waldfarm in Ankara.

These three albums are here published in facsimile and English translation together with contemporary commentary on the expedition as described by Krickl. Reading Krickl's journal we accompany this young military engineer on a journey with some of the most eminent scholars of his time through a world that was completely strange to him and in many respects is strange to us in Turkey today, due to the radical changes that have taken place over the intervening century.

Once upon a time Jews lived in Kirklareli: The story of the Adato Family, 1800-1934.

Today, due to emigration, only a few individuals remain. Erol Haker, whose parents were originally from Kirklareli, tells the story of three generations of the Adoto family, which has resided in Kirklareli since its expulsion from Spain at the end of the fifteenth century. Using the archives of the Alliance school in Kirklaerli as well as interviews with surviving natives of the town, Haker describes the Jewish lives in the nineteenth century and then their experience of traumatic events from the Balkan and First World Wars and the arrival of Bulgarian and Greek armies until the anti-Jewish riots of the 1930s. Haker's work serves to reminds us of the fact that the Thracian Jewish community was one of the Ottoman Empire's most vibrant and that Kirklareli was, until the early years of the Turkish Republic, still home to an important part of Turkey's Jewish population. Les études que nous avons consacrées respectivement à la chanson akritique et à la presse karamanlie, et, partant, un commun intérêt porté au domaine cappadocien et à ses populations, ont constitué le point de départ de cette recherche menée en collaboration. Notre décision de nous pencher sur la tradition orale des populations orthodoxes de la Cappadoce nous a été dictée par les considérations suivantes: - Une étude systématique faisait défaut qui porterait sur les rapports de la chanson akritique, et particulièrement du 'poème' de Digenis Akritis, avec les épopées et romans musulmans (Sayyid Battal, Köroglou, etc.) . o II n'existait pas d'étude sur les chansons des orthodoxes turco-phones d'Asie Mineure et sur la diffusion des éditions karamanlies de Köroglou, Ashik Garip. Nous avons donc constaté que les traditions orales, les 'monuments vivants' des turcophones avaient été ignorés par les recherches, qui s'étaient attachées exclusivement aux communautés hellénophones. Cette partialité de la curiosité constituait en elle-même un premier objet à interpréter. Nous avons donc été inéluctablement conduits, avant même de procéder à une étude philologique comparative qui exigera de recourir à la philologie et à l'ethnographie turques, à examiner les composantes idéologiques et politiques de la curiosité des intellectuels du 19e siècle envers les monuments oraux de la Cappadoce. Dans notre étude, la première, observons-le, dans ce domaine, nous avons suivi les progrès de la découverte du pays et de ses monuments oraux et son utilisation politique jusqu'à la fin du 19e siècle. Les problèmes abordés dans cette étude tendent à se regrouper en deux faisceaux. Cela découle de la nature des documents, textes grecs et karamanlis, et des traits originaux de la population, grécophone et turcophone, à qui nous les devons.

First map is the most famous one showing the Nile and the second one shows the Mediterranean shores and cities of Egypt. Rare first edition of the 10th, and the last volume of the Evliya's travel corpus including his descriptions of Egypt, Sudan, and Ethiopia in the late 17th century. This legendary travel account was published between 1896-1938 respectively in ten volumes. "Book X lands him in Egypt and takes him up the Nile to the Sudan and Ethiopia. When Evliya reaches Ibrim on the Nile, the southernmost limit of the Ottoman Empire, he remarks on the intense heat of the place; contrasting it with the intense cold he experienced at the northernmost limit, Azov; and with the mild climates at the eastern and western frontiers, Baghdad on the one hand, and Istolnibelgrad on the other. Apparently, Egypt suited him best, and he found Cairo a worthy counterpart to Istanbul; for he settled there to work up his memoirs of forty-one years of travel. He died around 1683, and there is controversy over whether a certain cryptic passage refers to the Ottoman defeat at Vienna.". (Evliya Çelebi's book of travels. 2. Evliya Çelebi in Bitlis). Evliya Çelebi visited Suakin during one of his journeys across Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, Somalia, Djibouti and Tanzania. He describes this territory under the title "The characteristics of old throne center Suakin" as "we stayed in this city for 12 days, trading with all kinds of people with camel trains. I sold 40 dromedaries in return for 500 piasters and also disburdened, sold 50 tusks for 500 piasters. Then we started to wander around the city. The Suez Sea is to the north of the island, and it takes 12 hours to reach Mecca from the island. Therefore, the direction of Mecca from this city is to the north. Suakin is a little island stretching three miles from east to west. (Afyoncu, Daily Sabah). Further travels in the 1670s took him to western and southwestern Anatolia and Syria. He completed the Hajj again and appears to have settled in Egypt for several years. He traveled in Upper Egypt, Sudan, and Ethiopia searching for the sources of the River Nile, before settling down to compile his great travel book. OCLC 630428224 (with four copies).

Evliya Çelebi was son of the chief court jeweler, he was educated in a madrasah (Islamic college) and a Qur?an school in Constantinople; and, excelling as a Qur'ân reciter, he was shown favour by the reigning sultan, Murad IV. Entering the Ottoman palace school, he developed skills in Arabic, calligraphy, and music. Under the patronage of the court he began the journeys that took him from Belgrade to Baghdad and from Crimea to Cairo, sometimes as an official representative of the government and sometimes on his own. The result of these travels was his masterwork, the Seyahatname (1898-1939; 'Book of Travels'). This work is also referred to as the Tarih-i seyyah ('Chronicle of a Traveler'). Evliya possessed a vivid imagination, occasionally mixing fact and fantasy; he described places he could not possibly have visited. Noted for his fascinating anecdotes and charming style, he wrote about the ethnography, history, and geography of the Ottoman Empire and neighbouring lands and about the inner workings of the Ottoman government during the 17th century. (Source: Britannica). Currently there is no English translation of the entire Seyahatname, although there are translations of various parts. The longest single English translation was published in 1834 by Joseph von Hammer-Purgstall, an Austrian orientalist: it may be found under the name "Evliya Efendi." Von Hammer-Purgstall's work covers the first two volumes (Istanbul and Anatolia) but its language is antiquated. Other translations include Erich Prokosch's nearly complete translation into German of the tenth volume, the 2004 introductory work entitled The World of Evliya Çelebi: An Ottoman Mentality written by University of Chicago professor Robert Dankoff, and Dankoff and Sooyong Kim's 2010 translation of select excerpts of the ten volumes, An Ottoman Traveller: Selections from the Book of Travels of Evliya Çelebi. Evliya is noted for having collected specimens of the languages in each region he traveled in. There are some 30 Turkic dialects and languages cataloged in the Seyâhatnâme. Çelebi notes the similarities between several words from the German and Persian, though he denies any common Indo-European heritage. The Seyâhatnâme also contains the first transcriptions of many languages of the Caucasus and Tsakonian, and the only extant specimens of written Ubykh outside the linguistic literature.
