Die folgenden Seiten zeigen, wie die unterschiedlichen Nachlässe und Autographensammlungen gerade dann, wenn ein umfassender Blick auf eine Person gerichtet wird, sich gegenseitig auf das schönste ergänzen und auch hier die Verflechtungen unterschiedlicher Zeugnisse der Kultur und Wissenschaft deutlich demonstrieren. Die vorgestellten Briefe sind auf sehr verschiedene Weise in den Besitz der Staatsbibliothek gelangt: Einige kamen innerhalb eines Nachlasses, andere sind Teil einer Autographensammlung oder wurden wegen ihrer Bedeutung eigens erworben. Für die Schiller-Ausstellung wurden Dokumente aus folgenden Nachlässen und Sammlungen entnommen: Der Nachlass 141 (Sammlung Adam) ist eine der bedeutenden Auto-graphensammlungen der Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin, erworben 1980 aus dem Besitz des 1979 verstorbenen Berliner Kaufmanns und Autographensammlers Herbert Adam. Die aus 139 Kästen bestehende Sammlung enthält vor allem Autographen aus den Bereichen Literatur, Kunst, Theater, Wissenschaft und Musik, darunter auch größere Konvolute, wie z.B. zu Friedrich Schiller. Die über 1.400 Stücke umfassende Sammlung Härtel wurde 1969 erworben. Sie enthält Verlagskorrespondenz und die Autographensammlung des Leipziger Verlegers Hermann Härtel, mit Schwerpunkten in der deutschen Dichtung, Kunst, Musik und in den Wissenschaften. Die Lessing-Sammlung, 1919 von dem Großneffen Gotthold Ephraim Lessings der Staatsbibliothek übergeben, war aus der bedeutenden Autographensammlung David Friedländers, eines Zeitgenossen Goethes, hervorgegangen. Neben den eigentlichen Lessingiana (1.168 Autographen, 1.715 Drucke und 594 Bildnisse von Gotthold Ephraim Lessing) enthielt sie über 6.000 Briefe und Manuskripte von Persönlichkeiten der Goethezeit. Leider sind die meisten Stücke der Sammlung zu den Kriegsverlusten der Staatsbibliothek zu zählen, nur einige wenige sind erhalten geblieben. Der Nachlass Adelbert von Chamissos wurde 1937/38 erworben. Er enthält in 35 Kästen Manuskripte, Drucke, Korrespondenz, Notizbücher, Reise-journale und Dokumente zum Leben des Naturforschers und Dichters. Der Nachlass gehört ebenso wie der 43 Kästen umfassende Nachlass Ludwig Tiecks (erworben 1870) zu den bedeutendsten Dichter-Nachlässen der Staatsbibliothek. Die Reihe der deutschen Handschriften der Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin (Ms. germ.) umfasst gebundene Manuskripte des Mittelalters und der Neuzeit, darunter auch gebundene Briefsammlungen wie die hier gezeigten Körner-Briefe. Die Reihe wird fortgesetzt. Auch einzelne Autographen wurden seit der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts zur Ergänzung der Sammlungen und Nachlässe der Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin erworben. Sie wurden in die über 210.000 Dokumente umfassende "Sammlung Autographa" eingereiht, der im 19. Jahrhundert auch Briefe aus verschiedenen Nachlässen eingegliedert wurden und deren größter Teil heute, bedingt durch Verlagerungen während des 2.
