About The Book : The history of the English trading settlement in Japan in the first quarter of the seventeenth century is the history of a failure; and the causes of the failure are not far to seek. Choosing for their depot an insignificant island in the extreme west of the kingdom, without even good anchorage to recommend it, and at a far distance from the capital cities of Miako and Yedo, with the Dutch for their neighbours and, as it proved, their rivals, the English may be said to have courted disaster. It is true that firando was a ready port for shipping coming from Europe; its ruler was friendly ; and it lay in a convenient position from whence to open the much- desired trade with China. And the policy of making common cause with the Protestant Hollanders against the Spaniards and Portuguese, who had first secured a footing in Japan and were powerful in the neighbouring town of Nagasaki, would have been a sound one, had the latter remained supreme. But, when the English landed, the Dutch had already obtained privileges and had established their trade in the country; and what ought to have been foreseen inevitably came to pass. About The Author : Sir Edward Maunde Thompson GCB FBA (1840–1929) was a British palaeographer and Principal Librarian and first Director of the British Museum. He is noted for his handbook of Greek and Latin palaeography and for his study of William Shakespeare's handwriting in the manuscript of the play Sir Thomas More. Richard Cocks (1566–1624) was the head of the British East India Company trading post in Hirado, Japan, between 1613 and 1623, from its creation, and lasting to its closure due to bankruptcy.

EDWARD RISCHMANN
1918 SIGNIFICANT ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT LETTER HANDWRITTEN BY ONE OF AMERICA'S MOST HONOURED SOLDIERS OF WWI RETELLING THE ACTION THAT LED TO HIS DISTINGUISHED SERVICE CROSS AND WHOSE VERSION DIFFERS FROM THE OFFICIAL GOVERNMENT CITATION
WESTERN FRANCE. Good. 1918. On offer is a simply outstanding first-hand account which differs with the official account of how a soldier won the second highest military decoration in the United States. This handwritten letter is 4 pages long and each of the two pages measures 9 inches by 6.75 inches. Although a bit frayed in some places along the edges the letter is completely intact. The handwriting is legible and easily read. Edward Rischmann was an American soldier who served with Company I 312th Infantry Regiment 78th Division A.E.F. near Grand Pre France. He was a private. The letter was written on Oct 22nd 1918. Rischmann was 23 at the time. On October 23rd he participated in the assault on the Citadel of the French town of Grandpre. This action was a small part of the overall Meuse-Argonne Offensive. It was the largest military operation in United States military history involving 1.2 million American soldiers. It was one of a series of Allied attacks known as the Hundred Days Offensive which brought the war to an end. The battle cost 28000 German lives 26277 American lives and an unknown number of French lives. It was the largest and bloodiest operation of World War I for the American Expeditionary Force AEF which was commanded by General John Pershing and it was the second-deadliest battle in American history. Rischmann's citation succinctly describes his actions. The citation however is incorrect: "CITATION: The President of the United States of America authorized by Act of Congress July 9 1918 takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Edward Rischmann ASN: 2412427 United States Army for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company I 312th Infantry Regiment 78th Division A.E.F. near Grand Pre France 23 October 1918. Private Rischmann was a member of an assaulting party which stormed and captured the Citadel at Grand-Pre. He scaled the wall and alone entered a dugout from which he captured 45 Germans guarding them until assistance arrived". His letter however breathes life into those dry words. Filled with courage humanity and at times despair his letter presents a haunting picture a man plunged into the hell of close combat: "In the middle of the roadway lay one of our dead soldier lads dead laying on his front part of his stomach. It was a pitiful sight to stare at. I can never get it out of my memory of this beloved young soldier lad who was shot down and killed while he was advancing toward the enemies. I will never forget as it is as though this boys position and his agonies he suffered dying there is imprinted into my mind". Although the Citation says he scaled the wall and alone entered a dugout from which he captured 45 Germans guarding them until assistance arrived. Rischmann's own words describe a grimmer reality. As he writes in his letter in the assault Rischmann was captured. He was led by his captors into that dugout. Because he was able to speak German he could communicate with his captors and began to help treat their wounded. "I was taken into a dugout that led into the earth. . What befell my youthful body and eyes I will never forget here were dying comrades of their army suffering in terrible pain. I quickly went to work and asked for bandages . I done everything human for these unfortunate men for I too felt sorry for them". A short while later he was questioned by a senior German officer and he offered to take their surrender and thus save their lives: ". I can save their lives and mine if they would surrender and give up to me. They held a brief talk together and suddenly the highest one who happened to have an iron cross pinned on his uniform said Alright Comrade We Give Up. So forty five Germans surrendered to me". Rischmann lived a full life after the war. He passed away in 1978 at the age of 83. This is an outstanding piece of primary documentation from World War 1.For a war historian it is precious. It provides the flavour and the context of an event that clearly warranted recognition. It conveys the immediacy of the action and hints at the horrors that he witnessed. 1917 ORIGINAL CHARMING PEEK INTO YOUNG LOVE AND COURTING WITH THE AWFUL BACK DROP OF WWI LOOMING FOR A COUPLE WHO WOULD JOIN IN LIFE FOR NEARLY 6 DECADES
RIDGEFIELD WASHINGTON WA. Good. 1917. On offer is a lovely original manuscript record of a young man's efforts to court a girl with whom he has obviously fallen in love. This soft cover journal is actually a notebook in which he has written in the dates and entries as the year progressed. Measuring 11 inches by 5.5 inches it contains 96 pages and is approximately 80% complete. He also includes a record of his expenses month by month. The cover is in good condition considering its age 100 years and the pages are all intact. His handwriting is legible. Edward S. Schwantes was born in Wisconsin in 1893 his parents came from Germany in the mid-19th century later his family moved to Clark County in Washington. He kept this journal in 1917 when he was 24 years of age. Although it records many things that took place in his life that year its focus is his courting of a young woman names Olga. Casual research has not turned up very much biographical information on Schwantes. We know he served in the U.S. Army and was discharged as a Private but the service years are not known. He is also recorded years later as a building contractor. He died in 1975 in Salem. However did he get the girl The answer to that lays below. Schwantes is a labourer in the Ridgefield WA area. He worked in carpentry agriculture and a variety of odd jobs: "Worked in the woods all a.m. To town in the p.m. and took in cream & brought back grass seed. To library in evening". Jan 25 1917; "Butchered old sow in the a.m. cut wood the rest of the day. Sent for 50 ¢ jar of Jacksons Influx Hair Grower & and one cake of soft Jacksons medicated soap - 25 ¢" Jan 29 1917. In February there is the first mention of 'Olga': ". took Olga home after church and found out some of her troubles. God help you Olga to win out in your undertakings. God only knows how much I would like to help you and I'm praying for you all the time Olga. I would like to do more and would do anything in my power to comfort and help you and protect you if only I dared to and I hope some day I will dare to . " Feb 18 1917. The relationship appeared to be blossoming over time: ". Had the pleasure of taking Olga home after church again and found out that her folks didn't object to my keeping company with her anymore." Mar 18 1917. He notes her birthday and his gift-giving ability: ". took Olga home after church her 19th birthday and all I could give her was love; it seemed I didn't have enough of that to satisfy her ." July 8 1917. Throughout the year he reports daily on his work whether cutting wood grubbing clearing trees shrubs stumps and rubbish from a site often a prelude to construction building and construction work etc. References to he and Olga continue throughout the year charting ups and downs. His journal also contains a detailed list of monthly receipts and expenses. And in the end did he get the girl Yes - research indicates that an Olga was born in 1898 in Scappoose moved in Ridgefield when she was about 16 in 1919 she married Edward Scwhantes and they were married for 56 years until his death in 1975. During the WW2 Edward and their sons were in the army and Olga worked as a welder in shipyards. One of their sons Paul was killed in action in the Philippines in November 1944. Olga passed away in Salem in 1996 at the age of 98. This is a wonderful looking into the life of an ordinary young man growing up in early 20th century America. His entries are well written and detailed. They give a social historian an excellent window into life in this time and place. May 4th 1880 thusly 28 to 35 years old over the writings of Plymouth Massachusetts. Mr. Bradford as identified in gilt lettering on the red leather cover appears to be an esteemed member of the community given the number of important events and meetings he attends the clubs he frequents and his activities whether at home or traveling. He appears to travel between Plymouth Boston and Jabez Corners. A casual reading finds he worked as the Deputy Collector of the Customs House and may have also at some point worked in the coal and wool industries. Further research suggests his father was Edward Winslow Bradford who married Miss Janet A. Ellis in 1875. The Bradford name via Edward Winslow traces back to the Mayflower.The years 1909 1913 1914 and 1916 and besides recording births and deaths of friends and family and notables he also provides a super look at the pre War era of a young family man enjoying a life of family and friends and high society life. Monday January 31st A very fine day. In the morning I had my skates prepared for skating. Nephew James Wells came down from Windsor Locks to spend a few days with me. In the afternoon I took my skates and going onto the ice at the foot of Grove Street I put on my skates and skated down as far as the Colts Freight Depot. Finding the wind trying to my eyes I stayed but a short time. There were a great many persons on the ice. Several boys were pushing girls upon sleds. There were some ladies skating. My nephew skated down to Wetherfield Cove near the Prison and back. Wednesday February 16th The paper contained an account of the arrest of Dr. Louis P. Brockett formerly of the firm of Brockett & Hutchinson of this city for forgery to a large amount. Monday March 14th In the morning manservant John refused to do some work which he was told to do and I gave him notice to leave.
