London: John Lane at The Bodley Head 1898. Hardback. Good. 9" by 6". None. A smart copy of this collection of poetry from Percy Bysshe Shelley and his sister Elizabeth Shelley. Scarce edition. With a facsimile of the original title page of this work published in 1810. A collection of sixteen poems and a fragment of a poem. Percy wrote eleven of the poems including seven lyrical poems four Gothic poems and the political poem while Elizabeth wrote five comprising three lyrical poems and two verse epistles. Controversy surrounded the work as one of the poems "Saint Edmond's Eve" originally appeared in the anonymously published Tales of Terror attributed to Matthew Gregory Lewis. Fearing a plagiarism lawsuit the volume was withdrawn from publication and suppressed. In 1859 Richard Garnett was able to substantiate that the volume had been published but was unable to locate an extant copy. The collection was reprinted and revived in this 1898 publication by John Lane once a copy had been found. Written by Percy Bysshe Shelley an English writer who is considered as one of the major English Romantic poets and his sister Elizabeth Shelley an English poet. Edited by Richard Garnett an English scholar librarian biographer and poet who was keeper of printed books at British Museum. In the original paper covered boards. Externally sound with rubbing and light chipping to the extremities. Sunning to the spine with minor loss to the spine label. The odd small mark to the boards with light loss to the head and tail of the spine. Internally firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot. Good John Lane at The Bodley Head hardcover
