Il segreto di Falkner riprende dal capolavoro giovanile di Mary Shelley Frankenstein la magistrale bravura con cui la scrittrice rappresenta i conflitti interiori del protagonista che rispecchia tutti i tratti dell'eroe byroniano. La figura femminile � per� centrale in questo romanzo in quanto impedisce ai personaggi maschili pur dotati di una spiccata moralit� di abbandonarsi a comportamenti che ne determinerebbero la rovina. Ultimo romanzo di Mary Shelley finora mai tradotto in italiano Il segreto di Falkner viene pubblicato nel 1837. Unico tra i romanzi della Shelley a vedere l'eroina trionfare fu definito dall'autrice stessa ancor prima di averlo ultimato il suo lavoro migliore. Mary Shelley nacque a Londra nel 1797 unica figlia del filosofo scrittore e politico William Godwin e della filosofa e scrittrice Mary Wollstonecraft antesignana del moderno femminismo. Visse un'infanzia carente di affetti ma ricca di stimoli intellettuali. Conosciuto Percy Bysshe Shelley nel 1814 se ne innamor� presto divenendone prima l'amante e poi la moglie. Nel 1816 a Ginevra in occasione di una sorta di gara di scrittura tra amici compose il suo romanzo pi� famoso Frankenstein. Mary e Percy vissero in Italia dal 1818 al 1822 anno della morte del poeta.
