Andersen Margit Yoel
Tegnebog
1895. Hardcover. Very Good. Dated 1895 but probably starting then and running another year or two. 8vo. 20.5 by 17 cm. Unpaginated 100 pp. most of which have pencil sketches. The greatest number of pencil sketches are portraits of people done with the developing skill of a child. One can see real progress through the album. While never achieving complete fidelity to a likeness the trend is easily in that direction. There is also an abundance of animal portraits and these predictably come much closer to a realistic representation. Most charming though are an anthropomorphic cartoon of frogs and two opulently decorated interiors which also feature human figures. The young artist was of Norwegian origin and thus the title and there are a few captions rendered in Swedish. Moderate wear.

hardcover books

ANDERSEN Hans Christian 1805 1875.
In Spain. Translated by Mrs. Bushby.
London:: Richard Bentley 1864. 1864. Sm. 8vo. iv 306 pp. 8 engraved plates frontis. 65 105 129 153 193 225 257 one pl. more than usual. Original mauve blind and gilt-stamped cloth a.e.g.; inner joint cracked. Ownership rubber-stamp of C. L. Hobbs contents page. Bookplate of Dr. Richard Klein. Very good. Scarce. First English translation a mild extra-illustrated copy of the author's "I Spanien" written in Dutch and issued in 1863. Andersen travelled through Spain in 1862 and was charmed by Spain nature people culture and its beautiful women. Anne S. Bushby d.1875 had translated the author's work earlier. Viggo Hjørnager Pedersen praises her work contrary to some other earlier views but he gives a fine account of the perspective of other translators and their work.

"The principal charm of the writings of H. C. Andersen the fervent love and admiration of all that is great and good and beautiful in the world reaches its climax in the latest of his works descriptive of a short trip through the Iberian peninsula entitled In Spain. Though now verging upon three score the Danish poet is more than ever joyful of life warm in his feelings and childlike in his wonder and admiration. The sketch of this little tour in Spain is nothing but a constant shout of rapture of ecstasy and delight finding vent now in poetry and now in prose. With an enthusiastic praise of travelling—even of railway travelling—the book opens and with a praise of life and of God who created the blessed course of human existence the last chapter closes." – The Spectator Archive.

"Mrs. Anne S. Bushby died 1875 knew Andersen personally had indeed courted his acquaintance since his first visit to London in 1847 when her husband called upon him to invite him to dinner Bredsdorff 1954: 314. At that time Andersen's English translator was Charles Beckwith Lohmeyer; but his English publisher Richard Bentley apparently encountered difficulties with him and in a letter to Andersen 160 Nordic Journal of English Studies dated 18 January 1853 suggested Mrs. Anne Bushby instead referring to her as "a friend of yours I believe" . . . Mrs. Bushby was not a professional translator but that her work was indeed a labour of love. It is equally clear from examining the stories she chose that she was not aiming at the children's market. . . " – Viggo Hjørnager Pedersen.

Contents: Barcelona; Valencia; Almasna and Alicante; The journey by diligence over Elche to Murcia; Murcia; Cartagena; Malaga; Granada; Gibraltar; Cadiz; Sevilla; Cordoba; Over Santa Cruz de Meudela to Madrid; Madrid; Toledo; Burgos; Over the Pyrenees to Biarritz. Tegnebog
Chrisiania Oslo 1898-1900. Hardcover. Very Good. 8vo. 20.5 by 17 cm. Unpaginated 100 pp. 36 of which have pencil sketches of human portraits. One sees in this sketchbook considerable progress over an earlier sketchbook by the same hand. Here the young Ms. Andersen is achieving considerable realism and accuracy in her faces with effective shadowing better proportioning and occasionally imparting convincing expression and even movement to the figures. One would not mistake this as the work of an established artist but one can see hints here of real potential. Also of interest is that some of the portraits are of theatrical and operatic characters -- Medea possibly Brunnhilda and probably others. The young artist was of Norwegian origin. Moderate wear.

hardcover books

First Edition in English of Hans Andersen's "Only a Fiddler" ANDERSEN Hans Christian. Only a Fiddler. Translated from the Danish. London: H. G. Clarke and Co. 1845. First edition in English. Originally published in Danish in 1837. Two twelvemo volumes. Measures 125 x 85 mm. 1 half-title v 208 16 catalog; 1 half-title v 180 12 catalog pp. Publisher's original gift binding bound in full dark brown morocco elaborately gilt-stamped on covers and spines. Adds list cost of Only a Fiddler for 5s. for cloth and 9s. for morocco. Half titles in red blue green and gold. All edges gilt. Previous owner's signatures on front free endpaper of vol. 1. A fine set. Only a Fiddler is a romantic tale and may be semi autobiographical the character Christian most likely representing Hans himself. His love interest is a Jewish girl named Naomi.
