<p>"Ray" on light blue personal 6925 Neptune Place letterhead La Jolla June 3 1957. 4to. 2 pages on separate leaves stapled together. To Edgar N. Carter at N.H. Swanson Company in West Hollywood: "Would it make any difference to a TV deal if I agreed to write the dialogue not the story -- only I suppose what you could call a polish job. Of course the writer would loathe me. I must make it clear that any work I should do would on be done in any TV studio since it might be from Tahiti or Tasmania. I understand that changes might be made because some actor might say "This line just isn't me" or some director might like George Marshall have an itching pencil. I ought to have something to say about who is to play the part. I think the actor is more important than the summer radio shot. I think you have the job of convincing these lauatics that if a show is to last it must cost not too much and must have some sort of special quality. Marlowe is a character of some nobility of scorching wit sad but not defeated lonely but never really sure of himself. It is impossible to think that such a man would not have a sex life but so many writers of this sort of story have made it too blatant and too vulgar. Marlowe would get almost any woman into bed with him by a certain obscure technique which depends almost entirely on making a woman feel that you respect her. Some of this has to go into Philip Marlowe if his is to be any good. If it is not possible to achieve this I think we should forget the whole thing. After all a great many writers have been trying to steal him from me for 15 years and they have never done it yet".</p> unknown

Chapman Ann
THE FEMALE PRINCIPLE IN PLUTARCH'S MORALIA
University College Dublin Press. Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. 2011. Hardcover. 1906359644 . Book is fine. DJ has very minor shelfwear. ; Plutarch whose works have remained immensely popular through the years has shaped our ideas about much of the ancient world. His humane sensibilities his skill in storytelling and not least his humor have combined to charm readers throughout the centuries persuading them that he is like them. In the twentieth century he was declared a feminist. In this study Chapman argues that his attitudes towards women were in fact those of his time and that while he opted for persuasion instead of force in controlling women his views are nonetheless chauvinistic. This book breaks new ground in scholarly terms but is also accessible to the general reader who wants to learn more about Plutarch and women in antiquity. ; 210 pages . Chapple Joe Mitchell Editor
HEART THROBS IN PROSE AND VERSE Vols. 1 & 2
Boston/New York: Chapple Publishing Co./World Syndicate Co. 1905. In 1904 Joe Mitchell Chapple editor of The National Magazine initiated a contest for the magazine's readers: "What I want is real heart throbs -- those things that make us all kin; those things that endure." Chapple offerered $10000 to contest winners and received 52000 entries --poems adages speeches prose works -- that had made lasting impressions. The contest judges winnowed the entries down to 840 winners published in Vol. 1 in 1905. Vol. 2 published in 1911 contains some 800 more. The anthology includes short selections ranging from the Bible to Poe from Shakespeare to Petroleum V. Nasby a real cross-section of what Americans were reading and remembering at the beginning of the 20th century. First Printing First Edition Thus. Eash book about 5 1/2 x 8 inches in red texured faux leather boards with rounded corners and gold lettering on front covers and spines. Both books tight and square. No dustjackets. 436 pages in Vol. 1 444 pages in Vol. 2; both include an index of titles and authors. Both volumes display red endpages; all text edges red-dyed and include a number of black & whilte illustrations. Both volumes are clean complete and unmarked except for previous owner's last name written neatly on fep. The boards of both volumes show only minor bumping and scuffing at corners edges and spine ends a bit of scratching but no tears or creases throughout.
