In this follow-up volume to the award-winning 'Agatha Christie's Secret Notebooks'Christie archivist and expert John Curran leads the reader through the six decades of Agatha's writing careerunearthing some remarkable clues toher success and a number of never-before-published excerptsand stories from her archives.Starting his investigation in the 1920sJohn Curran examines the conventions of detective fiction as it existedthen and reveals how Agatha Christie's publisher talked herinto changing the ending of her very first book'The Mysterious Affair at Styles'a move that almost changed thefortunes of not only her career but also the future of the detective novel. For the very first timethis book prints Agatha's original endingpainstakingly transcribed from the hand-written draft in one of her earliest notebooks. Every decade saw Agatha Christie's success grow to new heights. The emergence of the world-famous Collins Crime Club in 1930 brought with it the very first Miss Marple novel; the austerity of the 1940s had Agatha Christie preparing to kill off Hercule Poirot; and the 1950s saw her experiment increasingly with stories influenced by more modern thrillers. Focusing on more than 20 Christie novels as detailed evidenceJohn Curran demonstrates the evolution of Agatha's writing through the decadesincludingher perseverance through the Swinging Sixties and Seventiesinto old ageconcluding with a look at Agatha's last notebook and her ideas for an unwritten final book. As well as revealing more than a dozen unpublished book ideas'Agatha Christie's Murder in the Making' contains twounseen short stories from her archives - 'The Man Who Knew'and an early Miss Marple draft'The Case of the Caretaker's Wife'. Currer BELL pseud. Charlotte BRONTE
Shirley. A Tale. By Currer Bell Author of 'Jane Eyre'. IN CONTEMPORARY BINDING
Smith Elder & Co. 1849. 3 vols. 8vo. First Edition uniform mid-nineteenth inscription above title on all three title-pages fore-margins mildly age-soiled rather more heavily so on first leaves of first volume; see below; attractively bound in contemporary half calf marbled boards back ruled with six flat bands second compartments lettered in gilt fourth compartments numbered in gilt backstrip gilt faded but all lettering and numbering wholly legible neatly recased with new endpapers sprinkled edges a very good tight copy. The work was issued without half-titles. This is likely to be an early issue since it is bound without the 16pp publisher's catalogue dated October 1849 sometimes found at end of first volume. With the first of two leaves of publisher's advertisements at end of third volume. The mid-nineteenth century presentation inscription above titles is blotted and obtrusive but nowhere affects printed lettering. This copy has the following minor imperfections: Vol. I: mild marginal age-soiling to title and following eight leaves short closed tear on title neatly repaired on verso; Vol. III: wanting second leaf of publisher's advertisements at end. The first leaf here present contains the announcement of the third edition of Jane Eyre the second leaf here absent contains press opinions of the same work. Overall a nice copy of the author's second novel set during the Luddite riots in partially restored period binding. SCARCE.
