‎Très rare exemplaire de l'édition originale, d'une remarquable fraîcheur intérieure. Né à Beaujeu et mort à Gentilly, le poète et dramaturge Sébastien Gayet dit Sébastien Rhéal (1815-1863) est connu pour sa traduction complète de la Divine Comédie de Dante. Il ne s'agit pas ici d'une traduction des Psaumes, comme le titre pourrait le laisser croire : "Qu'on me pardonne d'avoir, un moment, usurpé un nom consacré jadis aux élus de Dieu", mais de nos jours le psalmiste "ne doit plus chanter uniquement comme celui de l'Horeb, interprète de la destinée et de la loi du peuple hébraïque" car le christianisme "a ajouté plusieurs cordes à la harpe de David". Le recueil est divisé en trois parties, "la première, écrite spontanément au milieu des tourmentes sociales, en retrace les principales phases" ; "le deuxième livre, d'où est tiré le titre du volume, s'attache plus particulièrement à l'interprétation des dogmes, placés au point de vue du passé, du présent et de l'avenir", et se conclut sur la prophétie de Dante empruntée à Byron ; "le dernier livre se compose de mélanges ou de poèmes écrits à des époques différentes. L'ouvrage est préfacé par le philosophe Pierre-Simon Ballanche (1776-1847), qui écrit : "En un mot, les arts, et la poésie, qui est le plus élevé de tous, sont tenus de représenter l'homme avant la déchéance, lorsqu'ils veulent le représenter dans sa beauté ; ils se dégradent en le représentant après, s'ils le font avec de lâches condescendances".
