Selon l'exemplaire de la British Library, l'édition qui annonce 212 gravures n'en proposait que 205, les autres ont donc été ajoutées. Reliure en demi cuir de Russie d'époque. L'auteur Berquin (1747-1791) se spécialisa très tôt dans la littérature enfantine, c'est même le premier à l'avoir fait. Ses livres pour enfants ont joui d'une grande popularité et ont été très souvent réimprimés tout au long du XIXe siècle. Les enfants anglais et allemands de la fin du XVIIIe connaissaient très bien l'oeuvre de Berquin. La plus grande partie de l'ami des enfants est constituée de courtes pièces de théâtre (historiques, morales, enfantines...), mais on y trouve également nombre de petits contes et romances, des lettres, ainsi qu'un récit de naufrage. On compte ainsi dans la table des matières générale 106 entrées. L'ami de l'adolescence contient également des pièces de théâtre morales, et d'autres pièces plus narratives ou plus nettement pédagogiques ; on retiendra La relation d'un naufrage sur l'île Royale, et le Système du monde mis à la portée de cet âge. Certaines oeuvres sont entièrement tournées vers l'instruction et la pédagogie, comme L'introduction à la connaissance de la nature (notamment par les figures d'animaux), ou les Entretiens sur les connaissances... D'ailleurs, ce n'est pas que Berquin fut le premier à étendre cette littérature qui est important, c'est plutôt qu'on peut situer à cette époque l'introduction de l'enfance dans nos cultures, et Berquin en est précisément un témoignage éloquent. The only English edition of an important work concerning Louisiana at the end of Spanish and French rule and the emerging American takeover. The author is known only as M. Berquin-Duvallon. He gives an unflattering picture of Spanish Louisiana with descriptions of the flamboyant Creole lifestyle and the ill effects of slavery as well as notes regarding agricultural productions especially sugar the look of New Orleans and other aspects of the country. Despite the title of this translation the author's experience was mostly confined to the area around New Orleans and not in West Florida. ‎XX 318 5 5 pp.First and only edition in the original French of a travel account of the territories of Louisiana and West Florida then a French possession but administered by Spain. Pierre-Louis Berquin-Duvallon 1769-post 1814 was one of the many French plantation holders who had fled the Haitian Revolution on Saint-Domingue and settled in Louisiana. Embittered by his experience he wrote an extremely negative report of Louisiana and its inhabitants who had refused to admit the refugees' slaves. Nevertheless after describing the geography and economy of the territories Berquin-Duvallon gives a colourful account of the cities and their inhabitants particularly of New Orleans. He found the latter to be a filthy place unworthy to be titled a city full of ramshackle buildings and streets that for the greater part of the year turn into open sewers. Its citizens fared no better as he considered them to be noisy and amoral they preferred drinking wine to conversation and only sought profit instead of education. The nightlife of New Orleans is particularly mentioned with its gambling and endless dancing where the low orders indiscriminately mix: black and white freeman and slave. In five specific chapters the former plantation owner Berquin-Duvallon describes the various racial groups in the colony: white "creoles" white foreigners freed people of colour and slaves. "This gives an entertaining and gossipy first-hand picture of life in New Orleans at the turn of the century; its theatrical companies dances the high status of medical doctors gaucheries of the Creoles and so on. Little is known of the author of this work save that he was born in Santo-Domingo where he was procureur du roi before the slave uprising. Berquin-Duvallon apparently fled to Baltimore whose hospitality to the French refugees and their slaves he praised. Louisiana on the other hand afraid of revolutionary blacks prohibited the immigration of the latter the author violated this law and found himself in trouble. Perhaps for this reason his picture of Spanish Louisiana is not a particularly pretty one.
