A VERY FINE COPY clean bright and free of the splaying that very frequently afflicts the boards of this work.<br/> <br/> This is a most appealing example of the luxurious hand-crafted volumes produced under the auspices of the Essex House Press with our copy coming from the library of a noted Dryden collector. The book is the 11th from the Essex House series of 14 "Great Poems in the English Language" a group of lovely little works all printed on vellum and with delightful colored illustrations and historiated initials. Generally considered to be the best example in English of the choric hymn the present work is set at a feast given by Alexander the Great who finds himself entranced by the poet and lyrist Timotheus. The great leader is lost in reveries of exploits and victory he sighs and cries over battles lost and warriors slain and he finds inspiration for new conquests. Our printer C. R. Ashbee founded the Essex House Press in 1898 by purchasing the presses and other production equipment though not the type formerly owned by the Kelmscott Press which had shut down at the death of William Morris. Ashbee printed books for 12 years with vellum ink and paper identical to that used by Kelmscott in an effort to carry on the tradition Morris had established. But the Essex House Press because it was conceived of and continued as part of a larger enterprise involving various artisans at work in a group of workshops at Ashbee's Guild of Handicrafts located at Essex House in London's Mile End Road always had its own special identity a fact which Cave reflects when he calls it the "Arts and Crafts press 'par excellence.'" The illustrator here Reginald Savage fl. 1886-1904 is deemed by Houfe "a talented and imaginative designer and woodcut artist" and Houfe notes that he was also commended by his fellow illustrator Walter Crane 1845-1915 for his "weird designs." Former owner William Andrews Clark Jr. 1877-1934 put together one of the most distinguished collections of English and French literature of his day. He had strong holdings in many areas but especially in Shakespeare and the other Elizabethans in Dryden in Oscar Wilde and in the French drama. After a fire in his home in 1923 Clark constructed a separate fireproof building to house his collection; in 1926 this library building with its distinguished collection was deeded to the University of California and now serves as a prominent center for literary research. Presumed second issue two lines of Latin verse on final page of this satirical poem lampooning the Earl of Shaftesbury. Small 4to: 1220pp. There are at least two issues: the first Macdonald 13.a.i lacks the Latin lines at the end. Recent hand-marbled stiff paper wrappers paper title label printed in black to front cover. An excellent example beautifully rebound and generally clean throughout. Macdonald 13.a.ii. Wing D2311. ESTC R17608. Pforzheimer 331. Ashley Library II pp. 84-85. Dryden's unsparing invective against the Whigs prefaced by a vigorous and plainspoken prose "Epistle to the Whigs." In 1681 the Whigs had a medal struck in Poland the Earl of Shaftesbury's head in profile on the obverse the sun rising over the Tower of London on the reverse to commemorate the release of one of their most prominent leaders who had been held in the Tower on charges of treason for opposing the succession of the Catholic James to the throne. It was the perfect prompt for Dryden's mock-heroic satire: "Of all our Antick Sights and Pageantry / Which English Ideots run in crowds to see / The Polish Medall bears the prize alone: " In fact most of "Dryden’s masterpieces were written in the 1680s after the Titus Oates Plot had driven the nation into hysteria against the Catholic minority with the result that thousands were imprisoned and a number including Dryden’s cousin Lord Howard were executed. From the start Dryden ridiculed the Plot fomented by the radical Whigs with all the civilized disdain he was capable of in The Spanish Fryar 1680 Absalom and Achitophel 1681 and The Medall 1682." A mid-eighteenth-century edition of a complete translation of Juvenal's satires by various hands and a complete translation of Persius done by poet John Dryden 1631-1700 alone. Dryden was additionally responsible for the translation of satires I III VI X and XVI of Juvenal selecting his fellow translators for the remainder including Nahum Tate William Congreve and his sons Charles and John. Dryden moreover provided a substantial preface the 'Discourse concerning the original and progress of satire' in which he presented a history of the genre a critique of its principal Latin practitioners and reflections on its modern use. The work was first published in 1693. Archibald Duff seventh of Drummuir 1773-1858 Royal Navy officer. Vice-Admiral Duff led a distinguished career in the Royal Navy serving with Nelson in the Napoleonic Wars and receiving both the Turkish gold medal for his role in the Egyptian campaign and the gold medal of the Royal Humane Society for his 'intrepid and manly exertions' in jumping overboard at night to save another man. The last edition of Dryden's lifetime. The third edition of this work and the last edition of Dryden's lifetime. First published in 1682.Extracted from 'Miscellany Poems: In Two Parts' second edition 1692. ESTC no. R21069.Very scarce to find copies both separately bound such as this and of the originating work itself. Bound in a later half crushed morocco with decorative paper covered boards and gilt detailing. Bound with later blanks to the front and rear. This political satire serves as John Dryden's response to the Whigs' decision to strike a medal to celebrate the acquittal of the Earl of Shaftesbury on charges of high treason. A fierce attack the poem criticises the Whigs who supported Shaftesbury and was part of a public dispute that involved Thomas Shadwell's counter-poem 'The Medal of John Bayes'. Dryden was appointed England's first Poet Laureate and was a dominating literary figure of Restoration England so much to the point that the period came to be known in literary circles as the Age of Dryden. Register like pagination runs continuous. Register for this work runs 6 K-L4 M2 as issued. Bound in a later half crushed morocco with decorative paper covered boards and gilt detailing. Externally very smart with rubbing to the spine head and tail. A minor mark to the front board. Illustrated bookplate to the front paste down. Internally firmly bound. Woolston created this collection of the "most admired poetry" from "the best authors." The biographical summaries at the rear include this description for Charlotte Smith: "Every reader of sensibility must lament with me the sorrows and afflictions which this very amiable Lady has been frequently and long exposed to though they gave birth to some of the most exquisite Sonnets perhaps ever written." <br /> <br /> Issued by Mary Luckman who took over her husband's printing business upon his death in 1784.
