BINDING/CONDITION: light pumpkin cloth with dark blue text; a Near Fine book with a Very Good dust jacket; publisher's price on the jacket flap is intact. 8vo about 9.5 inches tall. Map endpapers. Description: Dust jacket art and interior illustrations by Canadian artist E Joseph Dreany; the interior illustrations include chapter head and tail pieces a few full page drawings a frontis in color and three additional color plates. The publisher's blurb reads: ''In the early years of the last century great fortunes were amassed from the pelt of the beaver. Ships cargoed with knives guns bolts of bright calico axes mirrors trinkets sailed to the fort at the mouth of the Columbia River. Among the fur traders was Ross Cox who arrived at Fort Astoria in 1812 and left in 1817. He kept a journal of these years. Appearing in this volume as a companion is the journal of Alexander Ross author and servant of three fur companies. His writings constitute a valuable source on the history of the West. Both accounts were published many years ago and have long been out of print. Fortunately they have been rescued from obscurity by Cecil Dryden who presents them in a simplified form.'' A-Train: Memoirs of a Tuskegee Airman
Tuscaloosa Alabama: University of Alabama Press 1997. 421 pages. An inspection finds no apparent underlining no highlighting no bookplates no owner names not ex-libris no remainder marks. A touch of wear at the head and tail of the spine of the volume itself. Dust jacket is protected in an archival quality cover. The dj was scotch taped down at the front and rear dust flap but fortunately we were able to remove this tape without any apparent damage to the book. Number line in the work reads as follows: 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 . 03 02 01 00 99 98 97; my interpretation of this is that the work is a first edition second printing. If you disagree with my interpretation you are free to apply your own as the numbers in the book are stated for you. A serviceable copy of a World War II history for the WWII buff. Hardcover. University Alabama Press. Very slight staining to blank front free-endpaper. Signed and inscribed by the author under his frontispiece portrait opposite the title page. Otherwise a very good copy - clean bright and unmarked - in a very good dust jacket which is nicely preserved and displayed in a clear archival Brodart sleeve. ~QQQ~ The story of one of the black Americans who during World War II graduated from Tuskegee Flying School and served as a pilot in the Army Air Corps' 99th Pursuit Squadron. Charles W. Dryden 1921-2008 presents a fast-paced balanced and personal account of what it was like to prepare for a career traditionally closed to African Americans how he coped with the frustrations and dangers of combat and how he along with many fellow black pilots navigators bombardiers and crewmen emerged with a magnificent war record. Under the command of Colonel Benjamin O. Davis Jr. the Tuskegee airmen fought over North Africa Sicily and Europe escorting American bomber crews who respected their 'no-losses' record. Some were shot down many of them were killed or captured by the enemy and several won medals of valor and honor. But the airmen still faced great barriers of racial prejudice in the armed forces and at home. As a member of that elite group of young pilots who fought for their country overseas while being denied civil liberties at home Dryden presents an eloquent story that will touch each and every reader.
