(Civil War) Dryden, Charles
War in the Midst of America from a New Point of View
London: Ackermann & Co 1865. Approx. 130 lithographed caricatures on 20 panels folded accordion style. Oblong 12mo. Publisher's cloth pictorial label on the upper cover repair to rear hinge. Housed in a cloth chemise and slipcase. Approx. 130 lithographed caricatures on 20 panels folded accordion style. Oblong 12mo. A very rare satirical panoramic cartoon strip of an English artist's view of the progress of the American Civil War done in fairly crude cartoons and generally critical of Lincoln and the Union.

The printed title label on upper cover depicts Jefferson Davis and Abraham Lincoln fighting with Davis pulling at Lincoln's beard and with Lincoln's hand at Davis's throat while their other hands are tearing an American eagle in two. In the background to the left i.e. the South a man holds up a piece of paper to a slave telling him "My brother thou art free"; on the right side i.e. the North a skeleton follows behind a uniformed freed slave the skeleton ordering him to march and the freed slave saying "Jolly I am free" as he marches into battle.

The panorama follow the course of the War from the election of Lincoln and the taking of Fort Sumter though the major battles and political events up until Lincoln's re-election in 1864. Many of the caricatures are tongue-in-cheek depictions of the events and include comic situations involving the artist who is eventually captured and jailed but escapes back to England. The final cartoon depicts Lincoln standing on top of a power keg with a crushed slave underneath while devils surround Lincoln whispering criticism and problems in his ear and Lincoln saying "I guess I shall get a blowing up." Given Lincoln's assassination shortly after this work's publication and the rarity of the work it would seem likely to have surpressed or at least a very poor seller.

A very rare piece of Civil War political caricature. The Medal. a Satyre Against Sedition
London: Printed for Jacob Tonson 1692. Leather. Very Good. 9" by 6.5". None. A very scarce early edition of John Dryden's sharp satirical response to the Earl of Shaftesbury's acquittal. The last edition of Dryden's lifetime. The third edition of this work and the last edition of Dryden's lifetime. First published in 1682.Extracted from 'Miscellany Poems: In Two Parts' second edition 1692. ESTC no. R21069.Very scarce to find copies both separately bound such as this and of the originating work itself. Bound in a later half crushed morocco with decorative paper covered boards and gilt detailing. Bound with later blanks to the front and rear. This political satire serves as John Dryden's response to the Whigs' decision to strike a medal to celebrate the acquittal of the Earl of Shaftesbury on charges of high treason. A fierce attack the poem criticises the Whigs who supported Shaftesbury and was part of a public dispute that involved Thomas Shadwell's counter-poem 'The Medal of John Bayes'. Dryden was appointed England's first Poet Laureate and was a dominating literary figure of Restoration England so much to the point that the period came to be known in literary circles as the Age of Dryden. Register like pagination runs continuous. Register for this work runs 6 K-L4 M2 as issued. Bound in a later half crushed morocco with decorative paper covered boards and gilt detailing. Externally very smart with rubbing to the spine head and tail. A minor mark to the front board. Illustrated bookplate to the front paste down. Internally firmly bound. With significant toning to the last few pages of the poem and with scattered spots. With later inscribed notes made in pencil to the second blank to the rear. Very Good Printed for Jacob Tonson hardcover
