Publisher's catalogue dated Spring 1921 to the rear. The first of three novels involving Melian Stokes a character the pacifist and conscientious objector author based on Bertrand Russell. The Pugs and Peacocks in the title being familiar features of Ottoline Morrell's home Garsington Manor a centre of pacifist discussion and refuge for Bloomsbury Conscientious Objectors working on the land which thinly disguised provides one of the settings in the novel.
