‎(William PICKERING). Edmund SPENSER‎

‎The Poetical Works of Edmund Spenser. In Five Volumes. COMPLETE SET IN ORIGINAL PICKERING CLOTH‎

‎5 vols., sm. 8vo., on laid paper (dated 1824), with engraved portrait frontispiece, 'wreath' titles, some very light spotting and dust-soiling to text, fore-edges dusty, neat and uniform nineteenth century signature on front paste-downs; original brown [puce?] cloth, backstrips with original paper labels lettered in black, uncut and partially unopened, first volume expertly recased, third volume with small 'pull' at headband else a very good, firm set in minimally restored early cloth binding. THE SET IS COMPLETE WITH ALL HALF-TITLES. It includes Philip Masterman's 'Essay on the Life and Writings of Edmund Spenser' and an extensive glossary. The portrait is engraved by Worthington. The titles carry Pickering's distinctive 'wreath'. '[The books of Pickering's Wreath Series] possess in common an exceedingly pleasant format, and on their title-pages is his beautiful and individual wreath ornament usually [as here] with the motto 'Perennis et frgrans'. This ornament served to all intents and purposes as Pickering's 'device' in the books which he published in the years 1825 and 1826' (Keynes, pp.16-17). The work was an early product of his collaboration with co-publisher Talboys and Wheeler of Oxford. Pickering produced his first commercial cloth binding for his 'Diamond Classics' series of the early 1820s. 'He was afterwards imitated by other publishers, but the smooth red, magenta, puce or dark blue cloth used by Pickering remained for many years the distinguishing mark of his books. The innovation thus quietly made by Pickering in 1820 has had its effect on the whole subsequent history of the publishing trade in England, and but for him boards or paper covers for books might now be considered to be just as inevitable in this country as they still appear to be on the continent of Europe' (Keynes, pp.14-15). A MOST ATTRACTIVE COPY IN SPLENDID, MINIMALLY RESTORED BINDING FROM ONE OF THE FOUNDERS OF PUBLISHER'S CLOTH. This copy is bound in Pickering's characteristic dark brown 'puce' shade rather than the red cloth seen by Keynes. Keynes, p.90 (with asterisk denoting 'special merit').‎

A Vewe of the Present State of Ireland with pictorial woodcut title-page border and woodcut frontispiece map of Ireland by Macdonald Gill, both hand-colored. Publisher's prospectus loosely laid in. "The text of the present edition of Spenser's Works has been prepared by Professor W.L. Renwick. It follows in every case the first edtions…The decorations have been designed and engraved on wood by Hilda Quick, those in The Shepheardes Calender being based on the cuts in the original editions. The initial letters and the letterings for the title-page and headings have been engraved by her from designs by Joscelyne Gaskin" (Volume I, preliminary p. [8]). "The text has been newly prepared from the original editions by Professor W.L. Renwick…The headings and initial letters, drawn by Joscelyne Gaskin and engraved on wood by Hilda Quick, will be printed in colour. The decorations, in part based on the woodcuts in the early editions but for the most part original, designed and engraved on wood by Hilda Quick, will be coloured by hand" (Publisher's Prospectus). "The eight volumes of Spenser, 1930, are equally good-different, as the character of the author, is, but in merita nothing to choose between them. Perhaps the small devices below Spenser's sonnets, printed in black and in the vellum copies beautifully laid with gold, are the most discreet and opulent form of decoration, fitting and in flawless taste" (Franklin, p. 150). ‎ASHENDENE PRESS. SPENSER EDMUND‎

‎THE FAERIE QUEENE‎

‎Chelsea: Ashendene Press 1923. ONE OF 150 PAPER COPIES FOR SALE of a total of 180 plus 12 copies printed on vellum. 438 x 305 mm. 17 1/4 x 12". 2 p.l. 406 2 pp. ONE OF 150 PAPER COPIES FOR SALE of a total of 180 plus 12 copies printed on vellum. Original publisher's calf-backed thick vellum boards raised bands gilt spine titling. Printer's device on colophon page. Printed in red black and blue. Front pastedown with remnant of bookplate Hornby 32; Franklin pp. 144-46 240-41. Spine gently sunned and faintly marked joints slightly worn and starting alongside bottom compartment small chip to tail of spine but the vellum unusually clean and the binding entirely solid. An extremely fine copy internally quite clean fresh and bright. Franklin says that along with the "Minor Poems" this is the masterpiece among the impressive Ashendene folios. The Subiaco type used here was the first to be produced especially for the Ashendene Press it was originally employed in the small quarto Dante volumes. In consultation with Sidney Cockerell and Emery Walker Hornby decided to create a typeface based on that employed by Sweynheym and Pannartz who had printed the first books in Italy at a press established in 1465 at Subiaco and thus Hornby's choice of the type's name. Walker and Cockerell took photographs of the British Museum's copy of the early printers' Cicero "De Oratore" and used that as a model for the design. The punches were cut by E. P. Prince and the fount cast in Edinburgh. The fee charged by Walker and Cockerell for creating one of the foremost types of the private press movement was £100--a considerable bargain as Hornby was the first to acknowledge. Franklin says "Spenser's large folios were the last in Subiaco and the best. 'Monumental' suggests bombast which would be quite wrong; these books become eloquent by small felicities and discretion." The leaves here are of a larger size than any previously used at the press and this fact along with the clean gothic typeface and substantial binding make the volume a pleasure to handle and read. ‎BAKER, DAVID J.‎

‎Between Nations : Shakespeare, Spenser, Marvell, and the Question of Britain‎

‎Stanford, Stanford University Press, 1997. orig.wrappers. 23x15cm, viii,221 pp. PAPERBACK.. ISBN: 0804741840. Some damp-wrinkle to the bottom edges of last 70 pages. Good. ¶ Fusing historiography with literary criticism, "Between Nations" produces an array of unexpected readings of early modern texts. Starting from the premise that England has never been able to emerge or define itself in isolation from its neighbours on the British Isles, the book places Renaissance England and its literature at a meeting of English, Irish, Scottish and Welsh histories. It ranges from the late sixteenth through the late seventeenth centuries and deals with the reigns of three monarchs and one regicide those of Elizabeth I, James I, Charles II, and Oliver Cromwell. However, it shifts the domain they ruled from the customary center into interactions between England and the other British polities. The author argues that England was able to develop into what we call a nation only in and by means of its relations with the other proto-nations that often it was also suppressing" - publisher's description.‎
