‎* Merlin (vom walisischen Myrddin ist der Name eines bekannten Barden, Sehers und Zauberers aus dem Artuszyklus. Der latinisierte Name Merlinus erscheint erstmals bei Geoffrey von Monmouth (Historia Regum Britanniae, um 1135). Zugrunde liegt ein Myrddin oder Merddin, der ebenfalls um das 12. Jahrhundert in walisischen Legenden auftaucht. Geoffrey identifiziert Merlinus mit Ambrosius Aurelianus, der bei Nennius (9. Jh.) erwähnt wird. Der walisische Name lautet Merddin, Myrddin (das Llyfr Du Caerfyrddin, um 1250, hat die Schreibung Myrtin[1]). Die bretonische Form Marzin ist sehr unsicher. Die Herkunft des Namens ist unsicher, vermutet wurde ein Reflex des lateinischen Martinus. Damit läge der Ursprung der Figur des Myrddin in Legenden über Martin von Tours, dem Ninian kurz nach dessen Tod (397) eine Kirche in Whithorn gewidmet haben soll. Anwyl (1916) argumentiert, dass die walisische Entsprechung zu Martinus zunächst Merthin gelautet hätte, möglicherweise aber mit einem lautgesetzlichen Übergang von -rth- zu -rdd- zu Merddin geworden wäre. Die sprachliche Realität der Form Merddin sei ersichtlich aus einem Gedicht des Dafydd ap Gwilym. Die Latinisierung als Merlinus erklärte Gaston Paris durch den Umstand, dass Geoffrey von Monmouth von der Form *Merdinus zurückgeschreckt sei, um einen Anklang an merda ?Fäkalien? zu vermeiden. Die volksetymologische Verbindung zum Ortsnamen Carmarthen, walisisch Caer Fyrddin, hat die Form Myrddin (anstelle von Merddin oder Merthin) begünstigt; fyrddin ist die lenierte Form von myrddin, von einem mori-dunon ?Festung am Meer?. Dieser Name der Stadt ist seit der Antike bekannt, als Moridunum. Mit der volksetymologischen Umdeutung wurde der Name dann aber auch als ?Festung des Merlin? interpretiert.A.O.H. Jarman vertrat die Ansicht, dass umgekehrt der Name Myrddin selbst eine volksetymologische Ableitung aus dem Ortsnamen Caer Fyrddin sei. Es gab andere Vorschläge, die den Namen Myrddin aus dem Keltischen herleiten unter anderem von *mer- ?verrückt, ungesund, sinnlos? und (go)donios (walisisch: dyn) ?Person, Mann?, also als Bezeichnung für einen ?verrückten Menschen?. La Villemarqué (1861) wollte den Namen von einem bretonischen Marthin, Marzin herleiten, das er mit dem Wort für ?Wunder? (marz, von urkeltisch *marto- ?Tod?[8]) in Verbindung brachte. Die Vermischung mit dem Heiligen Martin von Tours hätte nach La Villemarqué damit bereits sehr früh in Gallien stattgefunden. Weiter verband Villemarqué die martes, Wesen in der französischen Folklore. Die Figur des Merlin wird von der Romantik aufgegriffen, zunächst in der Bewegung der ?keltischen Renaissance? um Owen Jones und Edward Williams (um 1800). Im deutschsprachigen Raum zuerst bei Dorothea Schlegel, Geschichte des Zauberers Merlin (1804). Danach erscheint die Figur Merlins in Gedichten von Ludwig Uhland, Karl Immermann, Alfred Friedmann und anderen. Merlin l'enchanteur ist ein Roman von Edgar Quinet (1860). Merlin ist eine Oper von Karl Goldmark (1886), mit Libretto von Siegfried Lipiner. Isaac Albéniz schrieb ebenfalls eine Oper Merlin (1905) mit Libretto von Francis Burdett Money-Coutts. Paul Heyses Roman Merlin (1892) befasst sich nicht mit dem Artusstoff. Clive Staples Lewis lässt Merlin im dritten Teil seiner Perelandra-Trilogie (That Hideous Strength [1945], dt. Die böse Macht) auftreten. Als England von einer satanischen Verschwörung mit Weltherrschafts-Ambitionen bedroht wird, wird Merlin zum Leben erweckt und hilft beim Niederringen des Geheimbundes. Es wurde zudem vermutet, dass die Geschichten um Merlin J.R.R. Tolkien bei der Schaffung seiner Romanfigur Gandalf aus Der Hobbit (1937) beeinflusst haben könnten. Eine einflussreiche moderne Adaptation des Artus-Stoffes ist The Once and Future King von T. H. White (1958). Mary Stewart beschreibt das Leben des Merlin in Flammender Kristall (The Crystal Cave 1970); Der Erbe (The Hollow Hills 1973); Merlins Abschied (The Last Enchantment 1979); Tag des Unheils (The Wicked Day 1983). Sie erzählt und interpretiert aus der Sicht des Merlin, der als ungewöhnlich begabter und gebildeter Mensch geschildert wird, die Ereignisse der Arthus-Saga, wobei sie sich durchaus an Chrétien de Troyes orientiert, aber am Ende jedes Buches die Fassung von Geoffrey von Monmouth zitiert. Marion Zimmer Bradley beschreibt in ihrem Roman Die Nebel von Avalon (1982) Merlin nicht als Person, sondern als Titel des höchsten Druiden Britanniens. Während des Untergangs Avalons, in dessen Zeitraum der Roman spielt, wird der Titel von einer Person namens Taliesin getragen.[20] Eine Verbindung zwischen Myrddin und Taliesin besteht in den Four Ancient Books of Wales, in denen Myrddin als Autor des Schwarzen Buch von Caermarthen angenommen wird und Taliesin das Buch von Taliesin verfasst hat. Es ist möglich, dass Zimmer Bradley diese Verbindung bewusst herangezogen hat, die Verwendung des Namens Merlin als Titel jedoch ist wissenschaftlich nicht zu belegen. Die Romanreihe Merlin-Saga von T. A. Barron (1999?2002) behandelt Merlins Kindheit. Dabei wird in fünf Büchern eine Geschichte um den jungen Merlin erzählt, bis zu dem Zeitpunkt, zu dem er nach Camelot aufbricht, um zum legendären Ratgeber König Artus' zu werden. Außerhalb der Belletristik beziehen sich gelegentlich Autoren esoterischer Fachbücher auf Merlin, oftmals im Kontext eines Mentors; ein Beispiel ist Douglas Monroe (1996). Weiterhin findet die Figur des Merlins in vielen weiteren Romanen und Geschichten Verwendung, nicht zuletzt im Fantasy-Rollenspiel. Eine bedeutende Rolle spielt Merlin auch im von Rob MacGregor verfassten, 1991 veröffentlichten Roman Indiana Jones und der Tanz der Giganten. Dort begibt sich der Protagonist auf die Suche nach dem Grab des Zauberers, Merlin ist hier auch der Erbauer von Stonehenge und erscheint am Ende dem namensgebenden Protagonisten sogar in einer Vision. Die nachfolgenden Bände der Indiana-Jones-Reihe aus der Feder von MacGregor spielen zwar an anderen Schauplätzen und haben ein anderes Thema zum Inhalt, doch taucht auch hier Merlin wiederholt auf. So stellt Merlin Jones in Indiana Jones und die Herren der toten Stadt (1991) nach einem Flugzeugabsturz vor die Wahl zwischen dem Tod und weiterzuleben, in Indiana Jones und das Geheimnis der Arche (1992) erfährt Jones schließlich, dass Merlin mit dem biblischen Noah identisch gewesen ist.
