‎Aan een geschiedenis van de moderne Vlaamse poezie heeft vooralsnog niemand zich gewaagd. In dit boek doet Geert Buelens een poging via de beproefde tactiek van de omtrekkende beweging: hij bedrijft geen 'echte', 'geobjectiveerde' historiografie, maar beschrijft de ontwikkeling van de dichtkunst in Vlaanderen door een omstandige reconstructie van de manier waarop in Vlaanderen door dichters en critici gereageerd is op de poezie en de persoon van Paul van Ostaijen (1896-1928). Na een introductie waarin onder meer Guido Gezelle en Karel van de Woestijne het pad effenen, volgt een uitvoerige beschrijving van de literaire activiteiten van Van Ostaijen en de impact die zij hadden op tijdgenoten als Gaston Burssens, Marnix Gijsen, Wies Moens en Victor Brunclair. In chronologisch gerangschikte hoofdstukken belicht de auteur daarna de manier waarop Van Ostaijen functioneerde in verschillende poeticale debatten, vernieuwings- en restauratiebewegingen. Hoofdrollen in dit verhaal zijn weggelegd voor onder meer Maurice Gilliams, Hugo Claus, Louis Paul Boon, Gust Gils, Paul de Vree en Erik Spinoy. Opgemerkte bijrollen worden vertolkt door o.a. Daar ontwikkelde zich enkele jaren lang (van 1958 tot 1962) een experimentele en pluralistische Vlaamse kunst, die nauw contact had met internationale kunststromingen. Ongeziene jaren voor de moderne Vlaamse plastische kunst, waarbij in het Hessenhuis de tentoonstellingen zich in een hels tempo opvolgden.
