‎La Fondation Roi Baudouin edite une publication sur la 'Montee au Calvaire' d'apres Jerome Bosch donnee recemment au Fonds du Patrimoine par Victor Jacobs van Merlen et ses enfants dans le but de la rendre accessible a tous au Musee Mayer van den Bergh a Anvers. L'ouvre temoigne de l'immense succes du langage pictural de Bosch au xvie siecle. Sa taille, la qualite de son execution et la creativite de son auteur lui conferent une place particuliere dans la vaste production des epigones du maitre. Le tableau, reste en mains privees jusqu'a ce jour, etait a peine connu et n'avait plus ete etudie ou examine depuis plusieurs decennies. C'est pourquoi, le Fonds du Patrimoine a confie au prof. Jos Koldeweij de la Radboud Universiteit de Nimegue et a Matthijs Ilsink, coordinateur du Bosch Research and Conservation Project a Bois-le-Duc, la realisation d'une etude critique et d'une analyse approfondie du panneau. Ils situent sans equivoque la Montee au Calvaire parmi les peintures qui perpetuent la tradition de Jerome Bosch, en devoilent les sources et la signification tout en refutant definitivement l'ancienne attribution a Jan Mandijn. Cette publication, richement illustree, presente leurs conclusions.‎

‎Ramsey Nasr schreef in 2001, in opdracht van Theater Lantaren/Venster, het libretto voor Leven in de Hel ? de operette. In maart 2002 ging de opera Il Re pastore (Onnozele Koning) van W.A. Mozart in premi re, waarvan het libretto door Nasr werd hertaald. Leven in de Hel speelt zich af in de Onderwereld, waar sinds jaar en dag een doodsaai maar uitgekiend systeem bestaat: je komt er binnen en wordt dan in het vuur geflikkerd. Wanneer Eurydike echter bij binnenkomst weigert mee te werken en verklaart niet dood te zijn, hebben de Koning en de Koningin van de Hel toch een probleem. Een lastige klant. En tot overmaat van ramp steken ook nog allerlei tot dan toe onbekende problemen de kop op: liefde, hoop, verlangen, geluk. In Il Re Pastore wordt de relatie tussen twee jonge geliefden op het spel gezet, wanneer een van hen geen herder blijkt te zijn, maar een koning. Voor deze belangrijke ontdekking moet alles wijken; er moet op stand getrouwd worden. Een prinses wordt voor hem gevonden, maar zij blijkt al verliefd te zijn op een ander. Dat is jammer voor haar en jammer voor hem, want wat is belangrijker: liefde of plicht. Vroeg of laat wordt iedereen koning, niemand is eeuwig kind.‎

‎Adam-Francois Van der Meulen, ne en 1632 a Bruxelles, fit l'apprentissage de son art aupres d'un peintre de l'ecole d'Anvers entre au service des archiducs espagnols et se specialisa dans la peinture de batailles, genre pictural dont les archiducs espagnols lui offraient d'autres modeles et sources d'inspiration. C'est a cet artiste que Charles Le Brun, premier peintre de Louis XIV et directeur de la Manufacture des Gobelins, fit appel en 1662 pour renforcer l'equipe des collaborateurs qui devaient l'aider a mettre en image l'histoire du roi de France. Van der Meulen devait marquer de son empreinte la peinture francaise du Grand Siecle. Il exerca une influence sur les artistes des generations suivantes par l'importance qu'il avait accordee au paysage dans ses compositions, par son sens aigu de la realite et ses qualites de coloriste qui repondaient a une evolution du gout vers un art plus directement accessible. Le jugement porte sur le peintre evolua naturellement au cours des annees. Apprecie en tant que talentueux illustrateur des conquetes du Roi-soleil et de la grandeur de son regne, il fut progressivement entraine dans le discredit qui affecta la peinture officielle du regne de Louis XIV et tomba peu a peu dans l'oubli. La presente etude constitue une contribution a la redecouverte de l'oeuvre de ce peintre qui temoigne de la richesse et la complexite des echanges artistiques qui existerent entre la France et les Pays-Bas meridionaux au XVIIe siecle. Nouveau.‎
