King Lily
The Pleasing Hour signed with full page inscription
New York:: Atlantic Monthly Press 1999. A bright clean square tight copy. Sharp corners. The Dust Jacket is NOT price clipped 24.00. NO chips. NO tears. NO creases. NO bookplate. NO remainder mark. Pages are fresh and crisp. NO underlining. NO highlighting. NO margin notes. Novel by the winner of the Raymond Carver Prize for fiction. Bound in the original rust-color boards lettered in shiny gold on the spine. "First Edition" is so stated but number row 10 987654 on the copyright page indicates this is from the fourth impression. From the Dust Jacket: "The first novel from a new literary voice brimming with sensitivity and lyricism THE PLEASING HOUR is the story of Rosie an American au pair in Europe whose coming-of-age defies all our usual conceptions of naivet and experience. Every autumn on a day called la rentre hundreds of filles descend upon Paris to move in with Parisian families and care for the children. They drink in the glamorous culture pursue romance and the perfect accent. But Rosie is different; when she comes to live with the Tivots on their houseboat in Paris she is fleeing an unspeakable loss that has left her hollow and longing for family. As Rosie awkwardly grasps for the French words to communicate with the Tivots she longs for a piece of common ground with Nicole the cool distant and beautifully polished mother of the three children she cares for. Rosie's bond with Marc the father of the household develops almost too naturally and the children make their way so deep inside her heart she can practically read their thoughts. But when Lola the middle child begins to suspect too close an attachment between the au pair and her father Rosie is alerted to her trespass within the family and moves to the south of France to care for Nicole's elderly guardian the storyteller of the family's secrets. As the narrative slides effortlessly into the warm light of the French countryside a tapestry is woven between a past darkened by war and betrayals and a present haunted by the weight of that legacy. Soon Rosie understands the tragic losses behind Nicole's austere demeanor and sees that the two of them have more in common than she believed. Demonstrating a wise understanding of love and the complicated dynamics of family with all its fierceness and delicacy Lily King delivers a highly accomplished novel." . KINGSLEY Rev. Charles
PHAETHON; or Loose Thoughts for Loose Thinkers.
Cambridge UK: Macmillan and Co. 1852. Hardcover. pp. 100.12moKingsley 1819-1875 was a liberal or 'broad church' priest of the Church of England a university professor social reformer historian and novelist. According to Wikipedia he was closely associated with Christian socialism the working men's college and forming labour cooperatives that failed but led to the working reforms of the progressive era. He was a friend and correspondent with Charles Darwin and is now best known for being the author of the classic children's tale 'The Water Babies'. Phaethon was a character from Greek mythology most commonly identified as the son of Helios the solar deity. This volume was especially bound for the noted British bibliophile Francis Frederick Fox in handsome 3/4 polished calf over marbled boards with the top edge gilt and the endpapers marbled. On the book's spine are three coloured leather labels the first top of which states 'Kingsley's Works' the second middle stating the title of the individual volume and the third bottom stating the year of publication. The printed armorial bookplate of Francis Frederick Fox is inserted as a cancel leaf preceding the half title page. The binding of this volume is signed 'William George Bristol' being the binder publisher and bookseller more commonly encountered as 'William George's Sons'. All publishers' advertising pages normally found at the end of most of the first editions of Kingsley's works have been removed by the binder. The leather is a bit spotted and the extremities of the boards are a bit rubbed. The binding is tight and some of the pages are uncut.

A series of imaginary dialogues about life art religion literature - and the relevance thereof. Macmillan and Co. hardcover

KINZIE MARY
A Poet's Guide To Poetry
University of Chicago Press Chicago and London: 2013. Softcover. Brand new book. In A Poet's Guide to Poetry Mary Kinzie brings her decades of expertise as poet critic and director of the creative writing program at Northwestern University to bear in a comprehensive reference work for any writer wishing to better understand poetry. Detailing the formal concepts of poetry and methods of poetic analysis she shows how the craft of writing can guide the art of reading poems. Using examples from the major traditions of lyric and meditative poetry in English from the medieval period to the present Kinzie considers the sounds and rhythms of poetry along with the ideas and thought-units within poems. Kinzie also shares her own successful classroom tactics that encourage readers to approach a poem as if it were provisional. The three parts of A Poet's Guide to Poetry lead the reader through a carefully planned introduction to the ways we understand poetry. The first section provides careful step-by-step instruction to familiarize students with the formal elements of poems from the most obvious feature through the most subtle. The second part carefully examines meter and rhythm as well as providing a theoretical and practical overview of free verse. The final section offers helpful chapters on writing in form. Rounding out the volume are writing exercises for beginning and advanced writers a dictionary of poetic terms and a bibliography of further reading. For this new edition Kinzie has carefully reworked the introductory material and first chapter as well as amended the annotated bibliography to include the most recent works of criticism. The updated guide also contains revised exercises and adjustments throughout the text to make the work as lucid and accessible as possible.
