Puis l'association quelque peu artificielle se délie pour laisser place à deux portraitures séparées par la suite des lithographies. « Les écrivains impérissables de chaque époque sont, inconsciemment, les représentations de ses tourments ; tandis que les interrogateurs moraux en sont les contemplateurs et les mesureurs.
