Charles Des Guerrois et un poète et littérateur champenois né à Troyes 1817. Il avait brièvement fréquenté le monde des lettres à Paris où il fut le secrétaire de Sainte-Beuve. Il a donné quelques pièces en vers à la Revue des Deux Mondes en 1850 et 1854. Rentré à Troyes, il semble nourrir une forte rancœur contre le monde des lettres parisien, et contre Cuvillier-Fleury, alors patron de la Revue des Deux Mondes en particulier. Au pied du Grand Escalier est une critique féroce de la société des lettres de son époque, les critiques d’abord, G. Planche et Cuvillier-Fleury ou encore Villemain qui font et défont les carrières d’écrivains. C’est ensuite au tour des “fâcheux de la littérature, héros de la production faite métier et marchandise, ouvriers infatigables sous la main desquels on voit éclore avec une facilité merveilleuse et déplorable, contes et romans, nouvelles et drames (...) où l’enluminure de phrase n’arrive pas toujours à dissimuler l’obscurité de la pensée” de faire les frais de la critique de Des Guerrois ; Dumas, Sue en tête, suivis d’un grand nombre d’auteurs “pauvres chiffonniers de l’art qui vont ramasser d’informes lambeaux laissés dans la boue par le dédain de vingt autres (...) industriels de haut et de bas étage, prôneurs et prônés, faiseurs de clinquant, arrangeurs et colporteurs...” Suivent les poètes “Quelle fureur, Lamartine, une pensée à peine éclose dans votre cerveau, vous force de prendre la plume et de la passer, cette malheureuse idée, à l’étamine de la phrase ? Vous êtes comme un fleuriste qui (...) portrait au printemps la main sur un bouton sans couleur, sans forme et sans odeur...” Puis les auteurs dramatiques “Victor Hugo, orateur, me fait l’effet d’un berger qui a un assez beau troupeau, mais qui n’a pas de chien et qui a oublié sa houlette (...) court après des pensées indociles, et son effort pour les discipliner est si grand qu’il oublie souvent le gîte définitif où il doit les conduire...”, puis les historiens. T. Gautier, J. Janin, Houssaye, Laprade, Méry, Cousin, Vitet et de nombreux autres font les frais de la critique anonyme du littérateur troyen. Au sujet de C.
