Carl Dolmetsch 1924 2019
Our Famous Guest: Mark Twain in Vienna
xviii362 pages with illustrations appendices bibliography and index. Royal octavo 9 1/4" x 6 1/4" bound in original publisher's beige cloth with black lettering to spine in original jacket. First edition. Although most of Twain's biographers have mentioned his Viennese sojourn occasioned by his daughter Clara's musical studies it has remained an unexplored hiatus in his career. Partly because of impressions created by Twain himself the twenty months he spent in Vienna are often dismissed as uneventful and unproductive. In this work the author shows the truth to be otherwise. Upon his arrival Twain found all the doors of the celebrity-mad city from its literary cafés to its aristocratic salons flung wide open to him. Through meticulous research in Viennese newspaper reports as well as in Twain's own journals and writings Dolmetsch reconstructs the writer's visit in breathtaking detail. The narrative sparkles with accounts of Twain's shrewd manipulation of the Viennese press his involvements in the city's musical and theatrical life the attacks he endured from anti-Semtic journalists. Condition: A fine copy in like jacket. University of Georgia Press hardcover

Raincoast Books Canada 2004. Softcover. Near Fine. 109 pages. Covers have superficial rubbing/wear. Spine is uncreased. Pages are clean and unmarked and in excellent condition. This lively book takes a loving look at the Canadian true crime pulps of the World War II era - their bold brassy covers spicy advertisements and stories of murder robbery sex and violence. Emerson Handbook
New York: Hendricks House Inc 1953. Hardcover. 8vo. Brown cloth with gilt lettering dust jacket. xiv 268pp. Near fine/very good. Mild jacket edgewear with several small edge chips. Errata slip tipped opposite half-title page. A tight and attractive first edition of this interpretation of Emerson's life and influence. Front flyleaf bears ownership signature of one C.D. Mead -- presumably the same C. David Mead who edited the 1970 collection "The American Scholar Today: Emerson's Essay and Some Critical Views" and author of a handbook himself -- the oft-reprinted "Prentice Hall Handbook for Writers." Below this is a fine archival decorative-edged bookplate bearing the full bold signature in turquoise fineline of famed Walt Whitman biographer Gay Wilson Allen 1903-95 -- who in 1981 authored the Pulitzer Prize-nominated "Waldo Emerson: A Biography."
