It was first published by the German classicist Friedrich Karl Forberg in 1824 in Latin and Greek as a commentary to Antonio Beccadelli's 1394-1471 Hermaphroditus commonly referred to as Antonii Panormitae Hermaphroditus an erotic poem sequence of 1425 in renaissance Latin though it was later also published as a separate work." / "Forberg's work was later also translated into English in 1899 and published by Charles Carrington as De figuris Veneris Manual of classical erotology and again in 1907 by Charles Hirsch and into French German and Spanish. RARE! The title slip on the cover is somewhat illegible but possibly can be read: UME TO TORA: PLUM & TIGER. . . WOODBLOCK-COLOR ILLUSTRATED EROTICA . The contents are nicely done showing twelve different scenes of love-making prints of a man and a woman. . 1. & 2. Man on top missionary position shows genital parts. . 3. Man licking her vulva while she holds it open and she licks his penis. . 4. & 5. Man on top making love they exchange tongue kiss. . 6. A Bonze Buddhist priest inserts his fingers into her vulva while he sucks on her nipple . 7. 8. & 9. Woman is on top making love genitals exposed. . 10. 11 & 12. Man is on top love making genitals exposed. CONDITION: The calico covers are a bit dusty the accordion folds are solid not weak or torn. Title slip is rubbed. . Each print is nicely woodblock printed. There is a tiny bit of purple transfer from the end paper on the first & last print. Others clean A nice example of Meiji 1867-1912 period printing by a skilled painter & artist. As usual this work is not signed this kind of erotically illustrated work was banned by the Shogun. Nevertheless this kind of Shunpon erotic book was still widely produced and distributed covertly. . REFERENCE: NOT LISTED IN: SHIBUI Kiyoshi.: ESTAMPS EROTIQUES PRIMITIVES DU JAPON:GENROKU KOHANAGA SHU-E . It is not surprising this and a plethora of other Japanese Shunga Shunpon Erotic prints & books are not listed in Shibui. While he lists many there are even more not listed in his book or any other reference book on the subject. . Erotic books were "suppressed" by the Tokugawa Shogunate therefore the majority of these kinds of books & prints were published on the 'black market' and not distributed openly. They remain on the 'fringe' of publication. There were stiff penalties for artists block cutters and publishers of this category of woodblock printed work. . . hardcover

Manuscript / typescript of 10 erotic poems with cover sheet in pencil giving the title and with the note that these would appear in 1919 in a deluxe edition and in very limited number. Indeed they were published 20 poems in total with the same title very limited 84 copies with erotic woodcuts by Bernard Cochet under his pseudonym Gece. This was in the estate of Edmond Roze d. 1943 a theatrical impresario in Paris who was good friends with Dekobra. These are all erotic and libertine poems celebrating women's buttocks and various erotic pleasures according to one critic evoking the pleasures of both opulent Messaline-type figures the promiscuous third wife of Emperor Claudius and 'vicious fourteen year olds.' Age toning light wear to cover sheet most corrections are insertions of commas and the like. Now fairly unknown Dekobra in his day was known as an edgy and interesting writer and was widely read and admired. paperback

Luxembourg: Privately Printed n.d. but Paris: Guibal c.1931. 4to 214 pp. With 53 color pochoir illustrations. Original printed wrappers binding cracked and shaken but just holding wrappers unevenly sunned internally fine. § Privately published in an unknown edition. Worldcat lists copies only at Yale and the Bibliothèque nationale de France although it is not rare in commerce. This copy from the library of Gershon Legman. A collection of fifty bawdy ballads beginning with the venerable and obscene "Les Trois Orfevres a la Saint Eloi." In the forward the compiler under the pseudonym "Vidame de Bozegie" explains the book was demanded by subscribers to his previous work 3 Orfèvres à la Saint-Èloi privately printed in Paris in 1930 who welcomed it as a monument de la chanson étudiant but lamented the lack of printed music. In this volume he presents fifty of "the best songs" in "a luxury edition on beautiful paper illustrated with color drawings worthy of a bibliophile." The music for each song is illustrated by pochoir. The author goes on to state: "I have avoided giving the illustrations an erotic character. They are obviously saucy but do not shock too-puritan eyes. I believe them to be worthy of the text." Puritan eyes would probably disagree in the strongest possible terms but it is true that alongside the lyrics the illustrations are comparatively restrained. Gershon Legman the great bibliographer of erotica erotic folklore and origami attributed the work to Edmond Bernard who was responsible for other significant collections of erotic folksongs. See Legman G. "Erotic Folksongs and Ballads: An International Bibliography." The Journal of American Folklore vol. 103 no. 410 1990: 417-501 referencing his own presumably this copy: "Copy: G. Legman. Edited by Edmond Dardenne Bernard as a supplement to his Anthologie Hospitaliere et Latinesque 1911-13 and its partial reprinting in 1930 as Trois Orfevres a la Saint-Eloi. Gives the musical notation apparently for the first time for these "Chansons de Salles de Garde" all later printed music for these except that of STAUB q.v. being largely derived from this edition and not collected in the field. A pair of Chinese erotic watercolours.
early 20th century. . Two loose folded watercolours on paper 56 x 34 cm. Some spotting and foxing some repaired tears. Erotic art - in letters and pictures - is an eminent part of the cultural heritage of ancient China where lovemaking was considered as a natural practice a sacred duty for both men and women. Albums with explicit drawings were often made for newly married couples as an instruction handbook. Here however the two scenes are rather unconventional illustrating polygamy practices that dominated aristocratic circles in the ancient Chinese society. The first watercolour shows not without a hint of humour two women engaged in a lovemaking game with a man. The second watercolour suggests the importance of self-pleasure for lonely females forced to live in a harem setting. Pieces like these provide a better understanding of Chinese culture that was largely suppressed in the wake of the Cultural Revolution in the mid-XX century. [early 20th century]. unknown

A very rare shunga entitled Shokanron or Shoganron The Theory of Lascivious Connoisseurship of Women
Many fine woodcuts the first color-printed of which 29 are double-page & 9 are single-page. 50 folding leaves. 8vo orig. blue wrappers rubbed new stitching. Japan: "Iki no omoitsuki nari" a playful pun meaning the publisher is sharing the thoughts of a connoisseur Preface dated ca. 1764-65. First edition of this fairly early shunga and extremely rare; no copy listed in WorldCat nor the Union Catalogue of Japanese Books. We have located one copy in the Ritsumeikan University Kyoto. This is a richly illustrated and witty book in which the author takes a novel approach: he describes how to appraise women from a sexual perspective. We find nothing like this book in the great exhibition catalogue Shunga: Sex and Pleasure in Japanese Art British Museum: 2013. The text is filled with double-meanings and puns and has almost the quality of a textbook. The beginning of the text states that the proper appreciation of women is of equal importance and gravity as the nine-year contemplation of Buddha by Bodhidharma. The author relates that this book was the result of 57 men with much sexual experience gathering and making a classification of gyokumon a woman's genital area. Each orifice is discussed and graded. The first woodcut is color-printed and depicts a woman her internal organs and the three sexual orifices one can make a woman pregnant the others not. The qualities and pleasurable sensations a man derives from each orifice is described. The many explicit woodcuts that follow contain dialogue alongside the images of men and women coupling. The men and women come from very different socio-economic levels and ages from aristocrats to samurai to merchants to actors to prostitutes all revealed by their hairstyles attire and room interiors. Later woodcuts illustrate the anatomical variations within women short necks big hips etc. also discussed in the text. Towards the end is a section on how to make a good match based on sexual characteristics. Another section describes how not to make a woman pregnant. The date of the Preface is based on two kanji characters that sound like "Horeki 15." The Horeki era ended in year 13 1763. The Preface was written and signed by "Keichoin" which has sexual connotations based on the characters. The first double-page woodcut did not print well on the recto nor did the text on the verso but is largely intact. Minor mostly marginal stains to four folding leaves. Minor worming to Preface leaves and again minor worming mostly marginal towards end. In spite of these defects this copy is in fine and fresh condition. Preserved in a chitsu. unknown books
