First published in France in 1934 and here being the first American edition. This publication in America led to obscenity trials which finally in 1964 was granted the book status of non-obscene by the US Supreme Court. Both fiction and non-fiction it focuses on the life of the author as a struggling author in France in the early 1920s and 30s. Blending both real friends and acquaintances along with fictional characters it was and still is radical for its time. The free sexuality and carnality of the book is what fell foul of the establishment of the time. Rubbing of the back strip edges lower edges and top book corners with bumping of the lower book corners. Fading to the lower back strip edge with uniform tanning of the text block edges and age toning of the pages. Stains to the front text block edge which has also occurred to the endpapers � particularly the rear though the stains have not intruded upon the text � please see photograph. Chipping to the back strip edges and a little to the top edge of the rear panel. There is a 0.75" tear to the lower right hand corner of the front panel. Rubbing and handling marks to the panels and the rear fold over crease shows sunning. Staining to the top edge of the rear fold over panel and rear dustwrapper panel. This staining can be seen to the verso along with some light browning. The laminate along the top edge of the dustwrapper has started to lift. This is the first USA edition.
